City of Chino Awarded Nearly $250,000 in

SB 1383 Local Assistance Grant Funds

CHINO, CA (March 27, 2024) -- The City of Chino is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $249,249 local assistance grant from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to further educate the community about SB 1383, a California Senate bill aimed at lowering greenhouse gas emissions and slowing the effects of climate change.

The grant, announced by CalRecycle on February 26, will allow the City of Chino to continue outreach activities at local schools, create additional education materials, hold community workshops, continue edible food recovery outreach services, and more.

“This grant significantly strengthens our commitment to education and sustainability, allowing us to further our mission of fostering a more sustainable future for all,” said Chino Mayor Eunice Ulloa. “I want to thank our Public Works Department for their hard work securing these funds, and I look forward to seeing these efforts implemented in our community.”

The City will be officially awarded the funds in the Spring of 2024.

SB 1383 is a proactive measure intended to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by targeting a reduction in organic waste, which generates methane in our landfills. It mandates residents to dispose of food waste, food-soiled paper, and yard waste in the green yard waste cart.

Under SB 1383, California aims to reduce landfilled organic waste by 75 percent by 2025 and increase edible food recovery by 20 percent.
