UPDATE: Domestic Violence Call Results in Officer Involved Shooting

CHINO, CA (June 26, 2024) -- On Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 10:18 p.m., the Chino Police Department received a call regarding a domestic violence incident at an apartment in the 12800 block of 10th Street. Officers responded and, upon arrival, were contacted by an individual in the parking lot of the complex. This individual pointed out the male subject involved in the incident and informed the officers that the subject was armed with a knife. 

 

The officer spoke with the subject, identified as 43-year-old Chino resident Jose Angel Mendoza, and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Mendoza brandished the knife and refused to comply with the officer’s commands.  Mendoza then advanced on the officer with the knife raised above his head, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers provided immediate lifesaving efforts to Mendoza until paramedics arrived. Mendoza was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during the incident. 

 

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and further information will be released when available.
