Camarillo, CA – Due to an uncertain financial burden to the City resulting from a decreased funding allocation to the Southern California region, the City of Camarillo has decided it is not prudent to pursue Project Homekey 3.0 funding from the State of California.
This means that the potential project the City was recently considering, which involved the rehabilitation of the motel at 165 E. Daily Drive in Camarillo for permanent supportive housing, is not moving forward at this time.
Instead, the City will allocate resources to expand existing homeless assistance programs to provide much-needed services and housing for our most vulnerable Camarillo residents. Beginning July 2023, we will extend our hotel voucher program to provide additional short-term housing opportunities for the unhoused. A case manager from the Ventura County Health Care Agency is paired with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Project HOPE team to assist in connecting voucher recipients to needed services.
In addition, we will accelerate the process to develop a Homeless Strategic Plan that focuses on prioritizing, resourcing, and locating emergency and transitional housing for the homeless community in Camarillo. During the course of that process, we will actively engage with the community to develop best practices and strategies to provide the most effective and cost-efficient services.
“Camarillo will continue to explore creating affordable housing options at a number of different locations throughout the community,” explained City Manager Greg Ramirez. “We remain committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to address the needs of our unhoused and vulnerable populations.”
If a future opportunity arises to partner with local agencies in pursuit of funding and operation of permanent supportive housing in Camarillo, the City will pursue those opportunities as feasible.
Addressing homelessness is a City Council priority. The City of Camarillo is committed to providing a safe and stable environment by creating permanent and interim housing with supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
