TREE SHOUT-OUT: THE REDBUD TREE

Keep an eye out for these amazing harbingers of spring in the coming weeks as they begin to showcase their stunning display of pink flowers! There’s a lot to love about these spectacular trees.

A Sacramento Region Native. The western variety of this tree is a California native and can often be seen near Folsom trails and mitigation sites. You can distinguish the western variety from the eastern by its leaf shape. The western redbud has round leaves.

Edible Flowers. The pink flowers of the tree are edible and high in vitamin C. They have a mild, somewhat sweet flavor making it a great addition to baked goods or salads. They can even be turned into jams or syrups.

Heart-Shaped Leaves. The eastern variety of this tree has adorable heart-shaped leaves. Bring some love to your garden by adding an eastern redbud.

The City of Folsom partners with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and SMUD to bring free trees to Folsom residents.

EMBRACING WINTER: THE IMPORTANCE OF TURNING OFF YOUR OUTDOOR IRRIGATION

Folsom's winter season is known for increased rainfall and cooler temperatures, naturally providing enough moisture for most plants and lawns. When we turn off our irrigation systems for the winter, we save vital water resources that benefit our immediate environment and support California's broader efforts to manage water usage wisely. It’s also the perfect time to inspect your system for leaks or damages, plan any necessary repairs, and add mulch to retain soil moisture and protect plant roots as temperatures drop.

Turning off irrigation in the winter is a simple yet impactful way we can conserve water and the health of our environment. As we enjoy the season's beauty, remember that every drop counts.
