Fresh Idea: Dr. Norman's Gardening Inspiration | |
|
OPTUM, a healthcare delivery network of physicians and healthcare facilities, is a valued Farmers Market sponsor supporting healthy lifestyles and wellness in our community. OPTUM Senior Medical Director Dr. Lee Norman is a River Market neighbor, an enthusiastic Farmers Market supporter, and an avid gardener, so we asked him to share some of the primary health benefits of gardening that research has “unearthed:”
Gardening improves heart health and helps regulate blood pressure: Even leisurely gardening is active; the movement gets your heart working, and being outdoors increases exposure to full spectrum sunlight that provides Vitamin D, which promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and keeps your vascular system running smoothly.
Gardening elevates mood, reduces anxiety, and increases overall sense of well-being: Studies show that natural sounds like birds chirping and being in contact with the earth have a calming, soothing effect on the psyche and may actually improve sleep quality as well.
Gardening improves cognitive health (memory, attention, ability to learn): There is a meditative quality to gardening that is shown to improve focus and brain function.
Gardening increases flexibility, balance, and overall physical condition: Bending, lifting, stretching, and moving in general help build muscle and strengthen joints. Growing and consuming more fruits and veg improves nutrition and helps maintain idea weight.
Stay tuned, next month Dr. Norman will share his thoughts on the benefits of minimally processed food and his delicious Fresh Tomato Soup recipe.
