Make Connections with a KC Farmers Market Passport

Be sure to get your KC Farmers Market Passport at our Information Tent during the Farmers Market. This handy little passport is your ticket to explore 20 local and regional Farm Stands & Farmers Markets.

Developed in partnership by Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council and CultivateKC, the KC Farmers Market Passport is a free, interactive guide that connects shoppers to fresh and healthy foods though an abundant network of urban agriculture. Each page provides vital information about the participants, so you know where and when to visit as well as other important details. Be sure to get your passport stamped at each location so you earn cash-value prizes with local small businesses.

The KC Farmers Market Passport offers fun for the whole family, while engaging in community and supporting a local food system. Alana Henry of the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council & Young Family Farm sums it up best: “So much of our relationship with food has to do with our connection and relationship with others, including the land we inhabit. My hope for this passport is that it builds more connections between the Greater KC community and those who grow local food. I believe it to be a small step towards fostering a happy, healthier, Kansas City.”

*Available while supply lasts.

Raise a Glass to Missouri Wines

City Market and Missouri Wines have partnered once again to showcase Missouri wine country! Learn about and taste award-winning local wines, discover new varieties, and explore ways to enjoy them.

This weekend’s sampling event is Saturday, May 11, and features Fence Stile Vineyards & Winery. This beautiful wine enthusiasts' destination is in Excelsior Springs (just 40 minutes from KC), and it’s the only winery in the region with a wine cave.

They produce mostly dry and off-dry red, white, and rose wines, a Piquette, an orange wine, a late harvest dessert wine, and port-style wines.

Be sure to put these upcoming Missouri Wines Sampling dates on your calendar:

May 18: Mathany Family Vineyards (Lake of the Ozarks, MO)

June 1: Edg-Clif Vineyards & Winery (Potosi, MO)

July 29: Baltimore Bend Vineyard (Waverly, MO)

July 6: Shamrock Hills Vineyard and Winery (Excelsior Springs, MO)

This Weekend at the Farmers Market

The Farmers Market is filled with vendors selling produce, prepared food items, distilled spirits, beer, wine, baked goods, arts and crafts and so much more! Come browse and experience all the delights of the day with us.

For a complete vendor list, follow this link.  Here are a few highlights:

Glenn Garrison, our beloved wildlife artist, has spent many years making friends as a vendor at the Farmers Market. He began drawing and sketching at age six and has continued to produce artwork throughout his life.

He uses a series of ink "dots" to create animals with detail and shadows. Hand-applied color tints make every print unique. Garrison Wildlife Art makes a meaningful gift. Shop framed and unframed prints as well as note cards.

Glenn was recently featured on KCTV5 News. You can watch it here.

Be sure to stop by his booth at the Farmers Market, and let him know you saw the interview.

It’s strawberry season! Did you know strawberries are a type of rose? Biolgically speaking, they’re related. Strawberries are also a symbol of purity and goodness because of their delicious flavor and fragrance. Therefore, strawberries are the perfect fruit to celebrate Mother’s Day! Spoil Mom with some strawberry shortcake this weekend. Find ripe, juicy and delicious strawberries locally grown and freshly picked from RaMatDar Farm and A&F Farms

Pink Pony Farms specializes in starter plants: annuals and vegetable starts such as heirloom tomato and heirloom pepper plants. They also sell seeds, honey, and chicken eggs.

Check out their artisan handcrafted products including: Black Garlic, Herb Salts, Spicy Pepper Salts and Dried Sage Bundles.

Everything at Pink Pony is HEIRLOOM, NON GMO - CHEMICAL FREE.

Every mom loves fresh cut flowers, and the Farmers Market is chock full of them! Shop multiple flower farmers for that perfect bouquet! Huns Garden recommends this Flower Formula to help cut flowers stay fresher longer:

  • 64-72 oz cold water
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 Aspirin tablet
  • 1 drop household bleach

Combine all ingredients. Stir until the aspirin dissolves. Arrange flowers in vase(s). Remove all foliage that will be below the water line. Fill vase just about two or three inches above cut end of stems (using too much water is a mistake!). Replenish vase(s) with fresh Flower Formula every 2-3 days. Store remaining Flower Formula at room temperature. Keeps for about 1 week.

Fresh Idea: DIY Plant Food Formula from Dr. Norman

OPTUM, a healthcare delivery network of physicians and healthcare facilities, is a valued Farmers Market sponsor supporting healthy lifestyles and wellness in our community. OPTUM Senior Medical Director Dr. Lee Norman is a River Market neighbor, an avid Farmers Market shopper, and an expert container gardener, so we're sharing a powerful DIY Plant Food Formula in this week's Fresh Idea column:

Plants all need 3 basic nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. They also need calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. You can combine kitchen scraps and household ingredients to make a powerful fertilizer that's chock full of nutrients. Just mix together the following and cover with water:

  • 1 tablespoon used coffee grounds (15 ml.)
  • 1 teaspoon Epsom salt (5 ml.)
  • handful chopped banana peel
  • handful crushed eggshell
  • 1/2 gallon pitcher of water

Let this mixture soak for at least six hours, then strain it into a watering can, and feed it to your plants to give them a boost of nutrients!

Click here for more information about Optum and it's service offering in Kansas City.
