Annual Count Captures Traffic Volumes

Each year the City collects information on the traffic volumes at the same locations across town. These counts provide an estimate for the number of vehicles on the road on an average weekday. The data is used by the City Engineering Team to assess traffic conditions for planning and operations.

City contractors have started placing video and radar count detectors on several streets to capture the traffic volumes and speed. Data is collected over three weeks, and each group of traffic counters takes about three days to set up and remove. The project will not disrupt drivers and should be completed by the end of September.

How To Get Relief From High Temps

A high-pressure system is lingering over the San Diego region and temperatures will remain high over the weekend. The City will open dedicated cooling centers at the Coronado Library and the John D. Spreckels Center when temperatures remain above 85 degrees.

Staying in an air-conditioned area during the hottest hours of the day is encouraged. Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler. If you do not have a ride to a Cool Zone, take the Island Express shuttle to get a free ride to a site. Tips to stay cool and how to keep pets cool in hot weather are available on the City website.

Wastewater Main Replacement Project Begins Soon

The City will start construction of a wastewater main replacement project in late September. The City contractor will work along First Street from D Avenue to Alameda Blvd, along Second Street from D Avenue to Alameda Blvd, and along Strand Way from Rendova Road towards Glorietta Bay Park.

Traffic control measures will be deployed to navigate traffic through, or detour around, the construction. Motorists should use caution when driving through the work zones and be aware of the traffic control devices. Residents living adjacent to work areas will be notified via door hangers as the construction nears their area. The project is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2025.
