The Latest from Doug
As we passed the 23rd anniversary of September 11, 2001, I hope you were able to take a moment to reflect on the immense tragedy and the countless lives that were lost on that fateful day. It was a day that changed our nation forever and reminded us of the resilience and courage of so many, from first responders to everyday citizens who showed extraordinary bravery in the face of adversity.
To honor and remember the sacrifices of the FDNY firefighters, police officers, and EMS workers who gave their lives that day, there will be a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb tomorrow morning in Segra Stadium. This event allows participants to symbolically complete the journey of those heroes by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Onsite registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the climb will begin at 8:46 a.m.
We encourage you to take part in the meaningful event. It's not just an act of remembrance but a powerful way to pay tribute to their heroic efforts to save others.
We will never forget.
This weekend is full of other exciting events as well. I want to highlight a couple that will bring both fun and culture to Fayetteville. First, the Greek Festival kicks off at St. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, offering two days of delicious food, music, and celebration. Whether you're craving gyros, spanakopita, or the sweet layers of baklava, there's something for everyone. The festival will also feature traditional Greek dancing, live music, and tours of the church. It’s a chance to experience rich Greek culture right here in our community. Be sure to check it out on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. or Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
For those looking for indoor entertainment, the Cape Fear Reginal Theatre is showing Footloose: The Musical. This is a fantastic opportunity to relive the story of Ren and his fight for the freedom to dance, all while enjoying iconic songs like “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” and “Almost Paradise.” It’s the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon or evening, so make sure you get your tickets before they sell out!
Stay safe, enjoy the festivities, and support local culture.
Best,
Douglas J. Hewett
