Interview with Kelly Koos, City of Lakeland City Clerk

Our City Clerk: Elections, Records, Boards and Committees

The role of the City Clerk originates back to ancient civilizations when scribes would document the business of government. The City Clerk for Lakeland attends all City Commission meetings and keeps a journal of the governing body’s proceedings. The City Clerk is the custodian of the seal of the City and of all contracts, records, and documents that memorialize official business. The City Clerk oversees elections for those seeking office as a City Commissioner and they administer the process for the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority.

As the City of Lakeland’s population has grown over the years, so has the role of the City Clerk. Today, Clerks are the glue that hold many cities together. City Clerks wear many hats and tend to be among the most knowledgeable in an organization for record documentation, record retention, keeping minutes for important meetings and administering municipal elections.

Municipal Election This November 7:

Changes to Law Affect Voting by Mail

The City of Lakeland has an election on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. City voters will elect three City Commissioners, one from District A (northwest), one from District B (northeast), and one At-Large (Seat 2). Additional election information is available at https://lakelandgov.net/departments/city-clerk/elections/

Following a new Florida law, all voters who would like to vote by mail in upcoming elections, including the 2024 Presidential Election, must submit a new request. Even if you have voted by mail in the past, the law says you need to renew.

The good news is that it’s easy and quick!

October 26, 2023 is the last day to request a Vote By Mail Ballot.

Walk-In Voting for the City Commission election will be available at the Lakeland - Polk County Government Center, 930 E. Parker St., Lakeland 33801, Weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., October 23, 2023 through November 3, 2023.

Hurricane Season is Upon Us!

It's essential to prepare for potential storms and the impact they can have on our water supply. Here are some tips to help you be ready:

  • Fill up containers with clean water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning in case of a water service interruption.
  • Trim trees and remove debris from gutters and downspouts. This will prevent blockages that can lead to flooding and water damage.
  • Rain in the forecast? Turn your irrigation system off! Our storm drains and wastewater systems can only handle so much water at one time.
  • Check to ensure that we have the most up-to-date contact information in the system by calling Customer Service 863.834.9535. Boil water notices and other important utility updates are communicated this way.
