New Picnic Area Coming to
He Mni Can-Barn Bluff
Eagle Scout in uniform presenting at a podium
When you hit the hiking trails of He Mni Can-Barn Bluff next spring, you may want to pack a lunch. A new picnic area is being built near the rock climbing section of the park. It will feature a cleared area with three green-treated picnic tables that Eagle Scout candidate, Zach Hofius, will build himself as part of his Eagle Scout project. Zach presented the idea to the Council during Monday's meeting and got unanimous approval for the idea. Way to go, Zach; we're ready to picnic!
Local Student, Nation-wide Recognition
Red Wing High School student Carolyn Hanson’s artwork is about to go on tour across the country. Every year, Sister Cities International hosts a Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) , using art to “transform societies and transcend cultural boundaries.” Our Sister Cities Commission chose Carolyn's piece as the local winner, and Sister Cities International selected her as one of a few nation-wide finalists. Huge congratulations to Carolyn!

Turning Leaves into Black Gold
The trees have begun to drop their leaves, and the citizens of Red Wing have taken to their yards to clean them up. Don't throw your branches, leaves, and other yard waste out; dispose of it for free during the Fall Cleanup event at the Waste Campus, now through November 2nd . Even better, over the winter the Waste Campus will convert your yard waste into free compost that will make Red Wing's gardens grow like magic next spring. Ready to get raking? Get the full details of the fall cleanup here.
An Artist's View of He Mni Can-Barn Bluff
When you visit the Red Wing Arts Fall Festival downtown next weekend, look for Marlena Myles, a Native American artist from St. Paul. Marlena will be sharing her vivid images based on the histories and stories she's listened to about He Mni Can-Barn Bluff. This Live Healthy Red Wing project is worked in conjunction with the City of Red Wing. Come meet Marlena and see her spectacular work, including drawings of the many plants you'll find on one of Red Wing's most beloved bluffs.

City 101 - New Recycling Truck
With the start of single-sort, Red Wing is upping its recycling game. To help, we've got a brand-new recycling truck hitting the streets. Its got a lot of great safety features, but one of the coolest things about it is that it replaces three other trucks . That means fewer emissions for all of us. Learn all about our shiny new recycling truck in this episode of City 101.
There's a New Trail in Town
Kids are naturally curious about the world around them—and now, there’s a trail for that. The new Born Learning Trail at Charleson Crest Park (off Aspen Avenue) encourages learning in creative, social ways, like imitating nearby wildlife sounds. The trail signs were installed by Live Healthy Red Wing, in partnership with the United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties and the City of Red Wing. The trail is yet one more reason to get outside and explore this fall.

Can You Find it?
Image of Burnside School front garden
This institution opened its doors in the fall of 1994, having moved from its previous location of 60 years. For most of its history, this building wasn’t even a part of Red Wing, but now the town couldn’t envision a future without it. Can you find it?

Regan Kilbride guessed correctly that this is Bluff View Park, right next to Colvill Family Center. This is one of the city's most used spots. The playground’s inspiration is a challenge course that is meant to keep younger and older kids alike more active and engaged. The sign language spells out “Can you sign your name?”
All in a Day's Work - Cory Stemmann
Collection route employee in front of recycling truck
Cory Stemmann knew he never wanted to sit in an office. That's why working on the collection routes for Red Wing's Waste Campus fits him so well. His office is the truck he drives, which switches with the route he's working. Right now, Cory's "office" is especially sweet; it's the brand new single-sort recycling truck. Cory tells us that residents are adapting to the new, every-other-week recycling collection schedule well; even better than he thought it might go. That's a good thing, as fall is the perfect time to get away to his cabin and enjoy some fishing when he's not at work. Hook a good one next time you're on the water, Cory; you're a keeper for the City of Red Wing!
