Important Update: Change in Single-Family Home Waste Management Services


In collaboration with Republic Services, the City of Springfield's Office of Public Works announces a waste service change for Waste Management customers, effective February 1, 2024.


Key Changes:

  • All single-family homes within Waste Management's service area will now receive trash services from Republic Services.
  • Residents are encouraged to retain the current trash cans Waste Management provides.
  • Republic Services will provide blue stickers to identify homes added to the scheduled pickups.
  • New routes have been implemented while maintaining the same scheduled pickup days established by Waste Management.


Important Note:

This change applies exclusively to Waste Management single-family homes and does not impact business customers of Waste Management.

Kandice J. Moore Recognized with Excellence in Action Achievement


It is with great pleasure that we announce Kandice J. Moore as the recipient of the Excellence in Action Achievement Award! This well-deserved recognition is a testament to Kandice's outstanding dedication and commitment to her role in the human resources department.


The Excellence in Action program will work in tandem with the City’s Minority Recruitment Initiative by allowing Springfield youth to see people who look like them operating in careers that are essential to the community's infrastructure. The program's goal is to inspire the young people in the Springfield community to follow in the footsteps of these distinguished individuals to become the change they wish to see.


As the first point of contact for applicants seeking employment at the city, Kandice plays a crucial role in helping individuals realize their full potential. Her tireless efforts have not only streamlined the application process but have also contributed significantly to the success of our human resources initiatives.

  • Persons who supervise lead-based paint abatement work on site.
  • Persons involved in abatement of lead-based paint.

Springfield Police Department Recognized as 2024 Community Policing in Action Photo Contest Winners

The Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) announces the winners of its tenth annual “Community Policing in Action” Photo Contest


We are thrilled to announce that the City of Springfield Police Department has been recognized as one of the distinguished winners of the 2024 Community Policing in Action Photo Contest. Organized by the Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), this annual contest highlights law enforcement agencies that exemplify the principles of community policing through positive interactions with their communities.


This year's contest saw active participation from over 170 state, local, territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies across the nation. Through a rigorous selection process, the Springfield Police Department's submission stood out, earning them a well-deserved place among the winners.


The winning photo (above), featuring Officer Lamar Moore and a participant in the SPD "Cops and Bobbers" fishing clinic program, will be showcased throughout the 2024 calendar year. The selected photographs will be featured on the COPS Office website, various social media accounts, and the COPS Office e-newsletter, The Community Policing Dispatch.


Congratulations to the Springfield Police Department for their commitment to community policing and for being a shining example of positive law enforcement engagement. This recognition not only reflects the dedication of the department but also highlights the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community they serve.

Ten New Officers Sworn In at a Ceremony at Springfield City Council Chambers


The Springfield Police Department is pleased to announce that Chief Ken Scarlette officiated the swearing-in ceremony for ten new officers on Tuesday, January 30, in the city council chambers. This significant event marks an important step in bolstering our law enforcement efforts and ensuring the safety and security of our community.


The dedication and commitment of these officers reflect our ongoing efforts to uphold the highest standards of service and integrity within our police force. New 2024 Leaf/Yard Waste Curbside Pick-Up Schedule


The new 2024 leaf/yard waste pick-up schedule is now available! Starting the week of February 5, the City's "no sticker," bi-weekly curbside leaf/yard waste pick-up will occur in the South Zone.


Reminders:

  • Bags must be placed curbside by 6:00 a.m.
  • Bags should not be placed on boulevards.
  • To estimate when your yard waste will be picked up, crews work from west to east in each zone. An interactive map and pick-up schedule are available on the City’s website.
  • If you believe your bags/containers were missed, email Springfieldyw@republicservices.com.

BRICK STREET REPAIRS

Closure of Cook Street, between 9th and 11th Street on Monday, February 5th through Tuesday, February 14th, for the removal of the existing Norfolk Southern bridge pier. 

ONGOING CLOSURES


8TH ST BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

From December 2023 to June 2024, 8th Street will be closed at Spring Creek. The detour is via Veterans Pkwy to J. David Jones Pkwy to Camp Sangamo Rd to 8th St.


TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF MADISON JEFFERSON STREETS

Madison and Jefferson are closed between 9th and 11th Street to construct new underpasses at these locations. The closure will last until June 2024.


STANFORD AVENUE CLOSURE

Stanford Avenue, between 11th Street and Fox Bridge Road, closed for major work, including constructing the new road with curb and gutter, storm sewer, sidewalks on the south side, and multi-use trail on the north side-anticipated completion by summer 2024.

Visit Springfield, the official tourism and destination marketing organization for the City of Springfield, IL, is launching the Springfield Horseshoe Trail Passport TODAY! This new program aims to heighten the awareness of the awesome food scene in Springfield along with the long-standing tradition of the “shoe” in town.


The passport is a free program that all visitors and locals alike can sign up for. With 24 local businesses included at launch, and many more expected to join. The passport showcases the best of the Springfield area in an easy, mobile-friendly way.
