January 14, 2023

On Sunday January 8th I was at Christ Church, Puyallup for the first service of a new worshipping community. This community is made up of mostly people from Kenya. I am so thankful to the Rev. Capt Paul Karume for his work in gathering this congregation. It is so exciting to be a part of a new mission, a new start.
This new plant is supported by the members of All Saints Goshen, Tacoma. In addition, I’m thankful to the Rev. Mike Mayor and the people of Christ Church, Puyallup for their wholehearted support. Also joining us at this special service were the Rev. James Auyen and the Rev. Mary Bol from St. John South Sudanese, Tukwila.
The music was glorious. Several musicians came to offer praise to God and encouragement to God’s people, including members from St. John South Sudanese Church, gospel singers from the area and a remarkable young man on the keyboard.
Of course, there was food. And oh, the food: Mukimo, Mandazi, and more. Traditional Kenyan cooking. And the fellowship. The celebration started around 3pm and continued well into the evening. | Folks, it was a celebration. I can’t remember a time when I’ve sang and danced more in a church. For me it felt like coming home to a place I’d never been before. Yes, some of the music was sung in Kikuyu, some in Dinka but it didn’t matter that I couldn’t understand it. The spirit of praise was heavy upon the place, and I felt it. People of different tribes, different countries, different languages, different continents came together to pray, to praise God, to hear God’s Word and to experience the risen Christ in the Eucharist. What more could one ask of a Sunday in church? |
In love and service,
Carla+
