A WORD FROM THE CANON

Greetings,

The Bishop Nedi Rivera Latino Ministry Endowment Fund is alive and well in the Diocese of Olympia. However, it might not be well known in our diocese. So let me tell you a bit about it.

The purpose of the Bishop Rivera Fund is to support the maintenance and growth of existing Latino ministry congregations in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia (those congregations with at least one year of experience of regular worship services at least once per month in Spanish or bilingual). The composition of a Latino congregation should have a majority of members who are Spanish-speakers or of Latino descent with at least half of leadership team (clergy, staff and board, Vestry or Bishop’s Committee) members who are Spanish-speakers or of Latino descent.

To date funds have been award to:

  • St John San Juan, Olympia: to support the work of the Rev. Jaime Case and the Latino ministry there.
  • St Luke San Lucas, Vancouver: to support two years of summer programming for children and youth (see more below).
  • St Matthew San Mateo, Auburn: to fund innovative programs to serve Latino youth and families in the Auburn area.
  • And St Luke’s, Renton: to re-energize and serve the community that was formerly known as Our Lady of Guadalupe through Base Community gatherings.

The committee that oversees the fund is always looking for projects that engage the Latino communities all over our diocese. If you or your congregation have an idea for a project, please contact me or Adrienne Elliott and we will be happy to talk with you about it.

The fund is named in honor of the Rt. Rev. Bavi Edna "Nedi" Rivera, who is the first Latina woman to be elected as a bishop in the Episcopal Church. She served as Bishop Suffragan in our diocese from 2005 to 2010. She oversaw several ministries, including evangelism, faith formation and ethnic ministries. Under her leadership ethnic ministries in particular thrived. Also, during her time with us she inspired and led several initiatives including: We Will Stand with You (which raised funds to rebuild St. Paul's Episcopal Church and School in New Orleans that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005), Nets for Africa (which collected over 30,000 malaria nets), Invite, Inspire and Ignite (which brought Bishop Curry to our diocese before he was Presiding Bishop), and The Rev. Richard Younge Curacy Fund (a fund to support curates of color in our diocese). The fund honors her legacy of creativity and her passion to serve communities on the margins, especially people of color.

If you’d like to contribute to the fund, you can do so through our diocesan website or by sending a check to the Diocese of Olympia with Bishop Rivera Fund in the memo line.

In love and service,

Carla+
