Greetings,
The death of the Rev. Jerry Shigaki has affected many of us more deeply than we can say. Rather than trying to say my words, I offer to you some of what I’ve heard from others in the past few days about our brother Jerry.
“Jerry was the heart of ethnic ministries.”
“One of the most compassionate souls I’ve ever known.”
“He didn’t talk community. He made community.”
“Rev. Jerry Shigaki was the founder of our congregation. Our church (St John South Sudanese Church) would not exist if not for him.”
“He was a master of building community.”
“He created our local Alzheimer's support group.”
“Father Jerry was always bugging me saying all the time, 'God is calling you.' After 10 years I was ready to listen, and I heard God’s call through Father Jerry’s voice.”
“Father Jerry was a gentle but powerful truth teller.”
“He pulled us all together in ethnic ministries and made us one.”
“He would tell me that (as a priest) 'You belong to God now.'”
“And there were walks, lots and lots of walks. The world's problems weren't solved but they seemed a little lighter after a walk with Jerry.”

Jerry Shigaki:

A father to me
My big brother

May these words speak to you as you remember Jerry.
