WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
April 22, 2023
| |
On Sunday March 16th I visited Christ Church, Puyallup. There I preached on “Courageous Thomas” and assisted Rev. Mike Mayor in the administration of the Eucharist. Although Father Mike has been at Christ Church for some time, the congregation will be celebrating their mutual ministry April 30th. Please hold them in your prayers as they celebrate.
In addition to preaching, I was there to be with their Sacred Ground circle as they discern what is next for them. I applaud the group’s work in moving from the big picture to the next steps. It was a good process that produced a concrete next step.
| |
Sacred Ground also came up at Saint Mark’s Cathedral’s Wednesday Forum “Exploring Racial Justice in the Episcopal Church.” Vinh Do and I facilitated a conversation around the Racial Justice Audit of Episcopal Leadership (2019). During that discussion some participants mentioned how Sacred Ground helped them and their congregations explore, examine, and discuss racial reconciliation and justice.
So, what is Sacred Ground and what role does it play in our church’s racial justice work?
Sacred Ground is a film and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race and racism, while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity.
The 11-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.
| |
Sacred Ground is part of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. This series is open to all, and especially designed to help white people talk with other white people. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope, and love.
Several Sacred Ground circles have formed in our diocese. Several congregations have already experienced Sacred Ground. As the Canon of Multicultural Ministries and Community Transformation, I recommend it as a tool in our larger work of racial justice and healing. My office is in the process of gathering data on how Sacred Ground is playing out in our diocese, as well as compiling a list of facilitators to help other groups experience Sacred Ground. I am glad to talk to clergy and lay leaders who want more information about Sacred Ground. I’m also eager to talk with congregations and Sacred Ground circles who have already experienced it and are wondering about next steps. Let’s keep walking this path together.

Circles of Color Retreat: Save the Date!
Friday, June 9th - Sunday, June 11th
We're very excited to announce that our long-awaited retreat will be Friday, June 9th, through Sunday, June 11th, at the Rainbow Lodge Retreat Center in North Bend (about 35 mins southeast of Seattle).
Besides fellowship, relaxation, and recreation, we'll take time to celebrate what we've done, and dream together about where we're going. This is especially crucial as support of the Circles in this interim period was named as a major diocesan focus (and the only consistent focus area named across all governing bodies, clergy, diocesan staff, and Circles themselves).
Stay tuned for more info and get in touch if you'd like to recommend facilitators, help with planning, or have any questions!

TN Representative, Justin Pearson's Easter sermon
"The word that I have on my heart is 'resurrection is a promised prophecy to a persecuted people.'"

"Resurrection" was top of mind for District 86 representative Justin Pearson after being expelled from his seat in the Tennessee House and then promptly being asked to speak to the congregation of a Memphis church on Easter Sunday.
The service video is further down the page. Pearson starts with a reading around 1 hr, 3 mins into the recording. You can also watch his powerful Holy Week message after being expelled on Maundy Thursday here.

June 3 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm | in person at Saint Mark's Bloedel Hall and online via Zoom; registration required
|
The Divine is not limited to one gender or race, but for many people the dominant image of God they've experienced is that of a white male.
Such a poverty of metaphor limits not only our understanding of the Holy One who overflows all human categories but also reinforces white supremacy and patriarchy. Join Dr. Christena Cleveland as she explores the Divine Feminine, especially in the context of her 400-mile walking pilgrimage across central France in search of ancient Black Madonna statues.
Cost: $65. Scholarships available. Includes a light lunch and snacks for those participating in person. Registration required.
