The Waysign

Church of the Wayfarer

Monterey Walk 2016

When it was confirmed that Dr. Donald Minkler had Alzheimer's disease he wrote a letter to his entire family to inform them.  He wrote of his blessed life, the joy he shared with his wife Betsy for 50+ years, his love for his kids and grandkids.  He asked for no sympathy or pity.  He hoped that his journey into dementia and eventual death would be used for research that would one day find a cure.

My father-in-law was a brilliant physician/ObGyn who, foregoing a lucrative private practice, earned a Master's Degree in Public Health. He ended up teaching Maternal and Child Health all over the world.  Don worked and did research in 104 nations as a consultant to the UN/WHO and the USAID.  He retired as an honored faculty member of UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and the UCSF Medical Center.  Born in San Francisco, he was awarded "The Key to the City" by the mayor at his retirement party.

Bonnie's dad will always be one of my heroes.  His memory and legacy are central reasons she and I are active advocates for the Alzheimer's Association of Northern California.  Along with raising funds we are both volunteers in the UCSF Healthy Brain Study, a survey of our memory health and aging.  We will both donate our bodies for research on the disease upon our deaths.  We watched this dear, brilliant man drift away to dementia.  If there is anything we can do to find a cure we will do so for others and to honor Don Minkler.

Notice how our most heartfelt prayers always come with a name?  It's true of our most honest hurts and hopes.  The same can be true for the miracles we witness as those we love heal and recover.   Name in your heart those you're most concerned about, those you're most hopeful for, and there you will find love.  Love always comes with a name.

Peace,
msb

Pottery Sunday
This Sunday, September 18th 10:00 a.m. worship will feature the "pottery sermon" in our sanctuary.  Pastor Mark has been a practicing potter for 45 years.  His ceramic art/craft are an expression of his spirituality as well as his love for clay.

Pastor Mark will preach while demonstrating wheel thrown pottery and will donate the finished piece for sale to benefit the church.  You will not want to miss it...bring a friend!

I-HELP
We are pleased to host the I-HELP women on Monday, September 19th and the I-HELP men on Friday, September 30th.  Food and beverage donations, as well as volunteers for set-up, clean-up and dining with our guests is needed. Sign-up sheets are available in the Garden Room.

For more information, contact Carolyn Thomas at 831.224.6460.  Thanks for your help!

The Wayfarer Women Distribute Funds
The Wayfarer Women met this week to distribute the funds raised at the Summer Luncheon/Speaker event in July.

Thanks to the involvement of our church by those who came out in full support and had a wonderful time doing it, $1,112 was raised.  Thanks also to our speaker, Mr. Michael Hemp, who presented without charge in order to further our cause.  Thanks to our raffle donors.  And much appreciation to the women, and men, too, who helped with this successful event.

The donations represent gifts: enabling our church to help those in need (Cornelius Fund), to support homeless women in our local community (The Gathering Place), for extended community (Dorothy's Place), and the food project that helps throughout the world (Stop Hunger Now).  Here's the breakdown:

1.    $260.00       The Cornelius fund
This is the fund that gives our pastor resources to help those in need as he sees fit.  The fund balance is down to $240 so it will be restored to $500.

2.    $250.00        The Gathering Place for Women

3.    $250.00        Dorothy's Place

4.    $250.00        Stop Hunger Now

Total:  $1,010.00

Wayfarer Women invites all women and friends of the Church of the Wayfarer to participate in our activities.  Our purpose is to know God and become whole persons through our relationship with Jesus Christ, to be a supportive fellowship together, and to participate and support mission work throughout our community and world.  Watch for the announcements of our coming activities.

THANK YOU ALL,
