THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WELCOMES YOU | |
|
We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.
We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world. We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church.
Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.
We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.

MEET OUR NEW PASTOR
THE REVEREND SCOTT LEE
| |
|
First Sunday at Christ Memorial Church will be August 6
The Feast of the Transfiguration
The Reverend Scott Lee was ordained in 1992 and retired from full-time parish ministry in Connecticut in 2018. He now lives in Sewanee, Tennessee, the home of the Episcopal Church’s University of the South (Sewanee), where he is a frequent supply priest for The Convent of The Community of St. Mary; for his parish church, The Parish of St. Mark and St. Paul on the Mountain; and for a consortium of rural congregations known as Southeast Tennessee Episcopal Ministries (STEM).
Before retirement, Fr. Scott served as Curate and Priest-in-Charge of Trinity Church, Clarksville; and as Vicar then Rector of St. Mark’s, Antioch (Nashville), Tennessee. He was Canon for Adult Formation at Trinity Cathedral, Little Rock, Arkansas, before serving as rector of two Connecticut parishes, Trinity, Wethersfield, and Christ Church, Stratford. He holds a BA in English Literature and an M. Div. degree from Sewanee, and a Master of Arts in Teaching English from Vanderbilt University. He is also a graduate and past mentor of the EFM program. He is an Associate of The Community of St. Mary and a certified teacher of Centering Prayer. He also serves as a spiritual director for Sewanee’s School of Theology. The Rev. Lee describes himself as “a voracious, lifelong learner.”
Scott first came to Hawaii in 1990 while he was in seminary to serve as a chaplain-intern at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu. During his work and training there, he developed a deep love for the people and cultures of Hawaii and has returned since that time for, he says, “8? 9? 10? visits, I can’t remember how many,” even attending The Merrie Monarch Festival in 2000. Over the years since his first visit, he has preached in various congregations on Oahu and The Big Island and has led a training event for The Diocese of Hawaii.
A lover of literature, he is passionate about The Divine Comedy, English poetry, and the best of mystery novels – Armand Gamache, Mary Russell and Harry Bosch among his favorite fictional detectives. Scott is an accomplished amateur cook, specializing in Southern and Italian cuisines. He enjoys the study of languages and jokingly says, “I am illiterate in several tongues – Hebrew,
Greek, Latin, French, Anglo-Saxon and tourist Italian.” He is guardian and protector of a black, domestic, shorthaired cat named “Rubric.” Ask him why that name and why she is called “Ruby.” He will be delighted to tell you. During his time at Christ Memorial Church, he will be visited by at least two mainland friends of whom he says, “I can’t wait to share with them Hawaii I have loved so deeply for so long.”

TRANSFIGURED: LUKE 9:28-36
By: Leslie Scoopmire
Sometimes, for a suspended moment,
light can be a physical presence, causing
eyelids to slam down like window-blinds, the doors
of the mind to bang shut in shock and wonder,
hands thrown up, defensively, as the flare
makes visible the bones in those same hands, hands
whose strength had been a source of pride but now
seemed as ephemeral as moth wings against such a light.
Even with eyes closed, the figures danced
orange and black upon the green screen of eyelids.
Light so bright it deafened,
at first we reeled, contained within the thunderous roar
of an open furnace door. Lightning forked heavenward
and split. Jesus stood, and two more–
on one side the Law in Moses, forming community; on the other
Elijah’s prophetic imagination: poet and goad.
In the center the Human One, divine image perfected
yet also living, enfleshed, as when veiled, among us.
And then the humming sound of our own heartbeats.
Now we saw the seams torn asunder,
Virtues at the center of a humanity,
enlightenment embodied, laid bare
and God’s Wisdom in the center, committed,
to lay himself down for our sake.
The holy companions murmured together,
as old friends do, laughing at meeting again,
the delight in pulling back the curtain
revealing essential cosmic union.
Of course we wished to stay forever.
But the pronouncement to listen shocked us to silence,
and we staggered like sleepwalkers
from the cloud-shrouded mountain,
newly alive, boundaries of earth and sky
an illusion. Scattered images dancing
along nerves, transformed from experience to memory,
our footsteps in sync with each pulse
that beat as one with that sacred heart
and thrummed from that unpierced wrist
and beautiful, unmarred brow,
Earth electric beneath our feet, transfigured.

A Prayer:
Magnificent Holy Father.
I stand before you at this altar. So many have given you more.
I may not have much I can offer. Yet what I have is truly yours.
This is my offering, dear Lord.
This is my offering to You, God.
Your offering enables us to maintain worship, prayer and study during this time. Help us continue to provide a beautiful, flourishing, and safe "Sanctuary for the Spirit" at our historic and faithful church on Kaua'i.
Change to Automated Giving: Thank you to those of you who automate your giving and have a plan to support your church. Your consistent, planned generosity makes it possible for us to budget and dream responsibly. Want to change to automated giving? It makes life easy, especially if you travel.
Live off island? If you have a prayer intention or would like to pray for those on our prayer list, email our office. To be part of the church collective means we all share in the cost of being a church. We want our church to have inspiring worship; pastoral care for those in need; beautiful church grounds; programs to learn and grow; and tools to reach out to those who are seeking a closer relationship with God. See the different ways you can share your gifts, on our Giving page HERE.
