Carver, the student, came to Iowa State at the suggestion of Etta Budd, former Farm House resident, and was clearly impacted by the professors and leaders he met as catalogued in a six-page letter written by Carver to Louis Pammel in May 1921. Tour the Farm House Museum with curator Allison Sheridan, highlighting the objects on exhibition in George Washington Carver, The Student & the Artist.

Periodically, we like to feature the stories of those whose support and giving enrich your University Museums. This month, we appreciate Mark and Marie Latta.

An auction listing, a curious attribution, and the world of American art pottery collectors merged at Iowa State in 2017. Deep in the pre-remodeled Brunnier Art Museum storage, Riley Humler, auction coordinator for Humler & Nolan auction company in Cincinnati, OH, Mark Latta, incoming president of the American Art Pottery Association, and Marie Latta, examined the over 50 works of pottery... A vase with an unrecognized mark and purportedly from the Iowa State College Pottery was consigned to the auction house, and Humler and the Latta’s were attempting to accurately identify the maker... The Latta’s passion for collecting and sharing collections knows no bounds. A portion of their personal collection of Rookwood pottery is currently on exhibition in the Brunnier Art Museum...

They both sit on boards and advisory committees, and act as advocates for museums. This dedication led to a gift to fulfill a University Museums priority project in 2020, an off-site climatized storage facility. The Latta Offsite Storage facility greatly enhances University Museums’ ability to host travelling exhibitions and loaned works of art, house large-scale sculpture, and process estate gifts in a safe and secure environment... When asked what delights them about University Museums, the Lattas responded: “The depth of the art that they oversee. Brunnier Art Museum, Farm House Museum, Christian Petersen Art Museum and the many installations throughout campus. Most of it unrivaled anywhere. And Museum staff are constantly working to preserve, showcase, and add to the amazing art.”

Surprise! Museums' Visual Literacy Uses a Scientific Process
by Anne Krapfl
Learners can apply the scientific method -- collect data, interpret and finally evaluate the information -- to unfamiliar images the same way they do words or numbers. That's the premise for the visual literacy program at university museums.
"It's exactly what scientists do, it's their process," said director Lynette Pohlman. "We use a different vocabulary in visual literacy, but it's the same process: You hold off on your evaluation until you better understand what you're looking at."
And because university museums' primary purpose is not to curate art exhibitions, but to support the university's mission of educating students... Read more
