March 2023
By Eileen McMorrow — Operating in 20 diverse clinic locations around Roanoke, Virginia, was not an optimal method for delivering pediatric services to its community. When Carilion Clinic realized the opportunity to develop space in a local mall with an ideal two-story space of 128,000-square-feet with vaulted ceilings, formerly occupied by JCPenney, the hospital’s management realized a longtime vision for its professional and support staff, caregivers and patients.

The Carilion Children’s Center at Tanglewood, which opened in October 2021, has united services for patients and caregivers around one location easily accessible to all, offering general pediatric care and sub-specialties. In addition, the mall space accommodates adult and pediatric dental services and adult ENT.

Carilion Clinic is a nearly $2 billion not-for-profit integrated health system headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, serving more than one million people in southwest Virginia and neighboring states. “Renovating the former JCPenney allowed us to accommodate all 20 clinics at one convenient location,” says Jennifer F. Rotenberry, Project Manager, Construction, Carilion Clinic Design & Construction Management.

By Sara Marberry — The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) released the results of its 2022 survey of top issues confronting hospitals. Not surprisingly, workforce challenges ranked No. 1. Financial challenges ranked second, and behavioral health / addiction issues ranked third, followed by patient safety, governmental mandates, and access to care. As I read the summary, I thought about how these survey results could be used by those of you who are planning and designing healthcare facilities.

Empathy is the essence of everything
It starts with empathy — putting yourself in someone else’s shoes who might not know what you know or think the way you think. This is true whether you’re an architect or designer trying to convince a hospital to hire you, a hospital facility executive trying to get approval for a project, or a vendor trying to sell products to a hospital.

The first facilities industry event in 2023 returns to Baltimore with NFMT 2023, the National Facility Management and Technology Conference & Expo. The McMorrow Reports & FMLink have been attending for at least 20 years, and we know our readers should, too. Healthcare facilities managers, executives, engineers and allied professionals will gather March 21-23 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland. Both the educational conference sessions, starting on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and ending on Thursday at 4:45 p.m., and the expo floor are bountiful with resources and exhibitors from all segments of FM.

Of note for the healthcare built environment sector are the following sessions: Preventative and Deferred Maintenance Reality Check: How Accurate is Your Equipment Inventory with David Trask, national director, ARC Facilities; Facilities 2023: Burning Questions, Stone-Cold Solutions with Andy Gager, CMRP, CPIM, CAMA, AMG Consulting, along with Darrell X. Rounds, Global Workplace Risk Mitigation, General Motors; Improving Indoor Air Quality with UVC Disinfection Systems with Brent Peckover, P. Eng., PMP, and CPA, director of Industrial Applications, Christie’s; Facility Management in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and Automation with Dean Kashiwagi, PhD, P.E., IFMA Fellow, director, Kashiwagi Solution Model Inc., and Demonstrating Commitment with GBI’s Green Globes for Existing Buildings Health & Wellness Distinction with Adam Wellen, director, Membership & Community, Green Building Initiative, among others.

Have you ever looked down on a green roof and seen something more than just the lush carpet of plants? Perhaps there was an artistic vision of some kind? Even a picture or logo? These striking and unusual rooftops are becoming more popular as the artistic boundaries of the built environment are beginning to be explored, says green roof provider LiveRoof.

"Green roofs" are vegetated or planted rooftops that can bring many health and environmental benefits, plus help buildings save energy. Some green roofs are planted in such a way as to be visible to onlookers: on a terrace, upon a lower rooftop, or even a slanted rooftop visible from the ground. They can even be installed at street level or on top of a parking garage. All of these offer excellent opportunities for patterned green roofs.

Patterned green roofs can provide good publicity if a logo for a business or product can be created. Similarly, they can support school spirit if the mascot or school colors are used. And, one can even create beautiful, touching, or eye-catching statements. Patterned green roofs can be works of art, can become iconic, and can increase property values! Lastly, patterned roofs are simply fun to look at and fun to design.

The 54th edition of the leading platform for commercial interior design and facilities planning returns June 12-14 to THE MART in Chicago when NeoCon 2023 unites the design community to experience groundbreaking commercial interiors products, educational programming and industry gathering. During NeoCon, major commercial solutions manufacturers as well as emerging companies will showcase thousands of new products and services in categories including furniture, flooring, fabrics, interior building products, interior finishes and technology.

Security expert Abloy UK supplied NHS Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, with the eCLIQ electromechanical solution for their on-site facilities management and security. NHS Raigmore provides an extensive range of healthcare services — surgical, medical, clinical support — and with eight floors, over 2,800 staff and over 450 beds, the hospital is very busy every day. The sheer size of the hospital estate requires a large facilities management team to oversee building maintenance and environmental services. Plant rooms, high and low voltage rooms and roof hatches are accessed daily to maintain the building — along with a helipad that needs securing and opening when air ambulance need to land.

NHS Raigmore approached Abloy UK to discuss a key management solution that would meet the latest regulations, has the capability to monitor the use of keys, and can easily revoke access from lost or stolen keys. Abloy UK recommended eCLIQ, a web-based locking and key management solution. The system was installed throughout the estate, with 82 locks fitted by Raigmore’s facilities management team and 42 keys issued to staff and contractors. Installation was easy as the cylinders do not require a power output.

Bobrick Washroom Equipment recently redesigned its Automatic Universal Roll Towel Dispenser with a streamlined appearance and improved operation. The North Hollywood, CA-based company says the sleek design makes for an attractive profile, and the new and intuitive, patron-friendly LED light clearly directs users to the towel activation zone, eliminating hand-waving frustration.

The Automatic Universal Roll Towel Dispenser accommodates universal roll towels, which cost less, reduce waste and require less maintenance for reduced total cost of ownership, especially in high-traffic facilities, adds Bobrick. Converting from folded towels to roll towels saves 30% in ongoing costs, while open-market universal purchasing provides freedom from locked-in contract prices and removes the risk of an empty dispenser. The Automatic Universal Roll Towel Dispenser is a key element of a well-designed, high-functioning, hygienic restroom that will stand the test of time.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
The Book of the Week from FMLink's new Books section hails from the OSHA Safety category. This collection of peer-reviewed books has been curated by the editorial team at FMLink to provide facilities, engineering and A&D professionals with access to publications relating to the OSHA Safety topic.

NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code, provides the most current requirements for minimizing the risks of fire, explosion, and electricity. NFPA 99 was created to make it easier to adopt, use and enforce a uniform approach and set of criteria for safety in hospitals, nursing homes, limited care settings, and other types of healthcare facilities.

With sweeping changes in the built environment, healthcare facility management professionals want to lead their organizations to higher levels of performance and experience. Hosted by IFMA, Facility Fusion is about building future-ready leadership skills. It’s about exploring what’s possible — for facilities, industry and careers.
