OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
We were pleased to announce Patrick D. Sanders joined the Agency as its new Head Start Director.  In that capacity Mr. Sanders will oversee the Early Head Start, Head Start, Summer Learning and After School Care programs, which serve over 1,800 Travis County families each year. In addition to operating responsibilities and programmatic aspects, he is charged with leading the agency to becoming a model Early Childhood Program that others can follow.

Mr. Sanders has over 14 years of management experience in a leadership role managing the Tir-County and GETCAP Head Start Programs in Nacogdohes, Texas.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work and a Masters of Public Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University.  Mr. Sanders has a history of involvement in his community and was the Board Chair of the following Agencies and Organizations:  Nacogdoches County United Way, Africa American Heritage Project, Progressive Leadership and former chair of Health Horizons.  He was a founding board member and past treasurer for the Christian Women's Job Coalition of Nacogdoches. Mr. Sanders also sat on the Nacogdoches County Agri Life Advisory Board, Bancorpsouth Community Advisory Board, and Stephen F. Austin State University Dept. of Social Work Advisory Board and NAACP Political Action Committee.

This year also marked the 50th Anniversary of the Head Start program.  On May 18th, 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson announced Project Head Start from the White House Rose Garden. On that historic day he made a commitment to open a window of opportunity for our nations most at-risk children and their families.

On Monday, May 18th, we joined Head Start programs across the country in celebrating the 50 years of opportunity Head Start has provided by planting a rose bush to commemorate the date.

With all the rain, we had to bring the celebration indoors, but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm. We were honored to have Angela de la Garza, a Child Inc Disability Resource Teacher and daughter of former US Representative Eligio "Kika " de la Garza speak at the event. Her father, Rep. de la Garza was instrumental in the legislation with President Johnson creating the first Head Start program.  As a young girl, Ms. De La Garza was present at the White House during the announcement of Project Head Start. Full circle 50 years later she commemorated the anniversary planting a rose bush with the assistance of the Fountain Plaza Child Development Center children. She is proud to continue the legacy of her father with a commitment to providing opportunities through education and we are proud to have Ms. de la Garza on our staff.

Let's keep up the good work.
Educating Children. Raising Families.

Warmest Regards,
Albert L. Black
SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

We want to thank The Honest Company and welcome them into the Child Inc family. The Honest Company has made several very generous donations of diapers, wipes, hand soap, bug spray and several other organic and non-toxic products for our home-based families and Centers.

In  addition, over 15 of their staff volunteered at our Centers in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month.  The volunteers brought puzzles and masks for a classroom activity.  Puzzles provide an excellent opportunity for children to development their problem solving, shape recognition and fine motor skills. Each child was very proud of their accomplished artwork, of which they took home as a gift from the Honest Company.

Thank You!

HEALTH HIGHLIGHTS

It has been a busy time full of productive e vents for  Health  Services at Child Inc. Beginning with Oral Health Month, our team continued to emphasize the importance of establishing a proper oral hygiene routine early in life to help ensure the development of strong and h ealthy teeth for our children with daily brushing at our Centers. Although dental care is important every month of the year, we use Oral Health Month to focus on this topic. In addition to informational flyers we encourage the Center Directors to contact local providers who volunteer their time to visit centers and speak on the importance  of oral hygiene. A few local dentists that have participated include the Smile Center and Dentalsaurus. We enjoy reaching out to local providers that parents have easy access to. For example, the most recent dentist that came for a visit was Dr. Arzagar, whose office is right down the road from Fountain Plaza. We look forward to sustaining good oral hygiene habits with the kids.

Child Inc is also proud to announce our acceptance in the UCLA and Johnson & Johnson Health Care Institute - National Center on Health's Innovative Health Literacy Improvement Program.  This program provided a train the trainer curriculum based on the "What to Do When My Child Gets Sick" book series. Post training, our Support Services Department hosted and facilitated a series of family wellness events, delivering this easy to understand, and culturally sensitive training to Child Inc families. It is our goal  to not only improve children's health and attendance, but also empower parents to make more informed decisions about their child's health and reduce the burden of unnecessary ER, and clinic visits on our healthcare system.

These events would not have been possible without generous donations from Sendero, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Maximus and the volunteers from the UT Nursing School, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Community Care Clinic. In total, we had seven events and reached our goal of training 100 families. We held a graduation on March 5th for families who successfully completed the program. We received positive feedback, regarding the usefulness of the materials presented. Most importantly, we wish to celebrate the moms and dads who participated because, after all, our ultimate goal is to equip parents with the knowledge and skills to best care for their children.
