NPR - At the 10th anniversary celebration and first-ever awards ceremony at Lincoln Center for the Doris Duke Artist Awards on Feb. 13, the Doris Duke Foundation announced the newest class of Doris Duke Artists and revealed it is doubling the size of its annual prize.

The Doris Duke Artist Awards program supports up to six performing artists annually, across the fields of contemporary dance, jazz and theater, with unrestricted individual grants that "celebrate their extraordinary and innovative artistry by unleashing their ability to chart their own courses, take creative risks and define what they need, personally and professionally, to thrive and create powerful work." The award amount has increased from $275,000 to $550,000.

The 10th class of Doris Duke Artists are honored as "visionary performing artists and trailblazers in their fields."

Trumpeter and composer Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (Christian Scott) and vocalist Somi Kakoma received awards in the jazz category this year.
Other recipients for 2023 include director Charlotte Brathwaite, choreographer and performer Ayodele Casel, choreographer and performer Rosy Simas, and playwright and performer Kristina Wong.

“When artists thrive, we all thrive,” said the Foundation's President and CEO Sam Gill in his remarks at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Monday. “Tonight we evolve the Doris Duke Artist Award from an award to a platform—a platform to advocate and fight for the future of artists.”

The Doris Duke Artists Award is also one of the first grant programs to offer a unique matching feature for up to $25,000 of the award, to encourage artists to invest in late-career savings, since there are limited retirement-type benefit programs available to most performing artists.

“What a decade of this award has revealed to us is that if you trust extraordinary artists like the ones here tonight and give them the conditions to thrive, they will go beyond the boundaries and expectations that you or anyone else could set for them,” said Maurine Knighton, chief program officer at the Doris Duke Foundation.

“They will open doors to worlds previously unimagined and unlock new levels of creativity.”

A Tribute to Aretha Franklin, Kirk Whalum
Tempe Center for the Arts Celebrates the
Kickoff of Jazz Appreciation Month, Saturday, April 8th, 2023
A Look at the Impact of African American Culture on Music
TEMPE, AZ (February 8, 2023) - Celebrated every April, Jazz Appreciation Month brings together communities worldwide to celebrate jazz and learn about its history.

International Jazz Day AZ Foundation is incredibly honored to again join forces with Tempe Mayor Corey Woods to present "From Gospel to Jazz Explosion Concert on April 8, 2023. We have a spectacular lineup featuring Stellar Award Winner Reggie Campbell, Smooth Jazz Billboard Artist saxophonist Neamen Lyles, and special guest Guitar Center Runner-up drummer of the year Fred Boswell Jr., Kiara Jayne, Eloni Yawn, Tuena Marie and more.

"Music has the power to unite people across borders; Gospel and Jazz have been doing that for years," said William 'Doc' Jones.

"The concert at the Tempe Center for The Arts is a tribute to the impact of the African American experience of these two genres of music.

International Jazz Day AZ Foundation, founded in 2015, is an Arizona-based non-profit organization led by William “Doc” Jones, a professional jazz musician and music educator. Jones has been working closely with Alfredo J. Molina, a philanthropist and owner of Molina’s Fine Jewelers, Keith Corley founder, CEO of The Corley Group, and Arizona State legislators to educate Arizonans and visitors on jazz music’s extraordinary heritage and history.

Starting with Cityscape in downtown Phoenix on April 30, 2013, the International Jazz Day AZ festival have expanded to Scottsdale, Mesa, Alamos Sonora Mexico, and an annual “Jazz at Lunch” on the lawn at the Arizona State Capitol now moved to Civic Space Park in Phoenix, Arizona. The biggest testament to the festival’s growing popularity is three mayors from

Scottsdale, Tempe, and Paradise Valley joining hands for the upcoming celebration to promote tourism in the state.

Rich with extraordinary heritage and cultural history, jazz music originated in the blues era in the early 20th century and bestowed the world with bebop tunes we can dance to all night. Recognized internationally, Jazz Appreciation Month draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout the month of April.

In December 2012, the United Nations General Assembly formally welcomed the decision by the UNESCO General Conference to proclaim April 30th as International Jazz Day, ( jazzdayaz.com).

The United Nations and UNESCO now both recognize International Jazz Day on their official calendars and with celebratory activities throughout the world with over 190 countries participating.

The proceeds from the festival sponsor music programs in organizations such as Next Student Academy for the Arts, Molina’s School of Jazz, and the Doc’s Afterschool music program.” He added.

Our mission is to make live music available to the next generation. Jazz has the power to transform lives intellectually, emotionally, and socially. We genuinely believe that Jazz is a language that helps us listen, express, and create. We partner with Charter schools and community organizations in Arizona and develop jazz programs in collaboration with them. Every child has the right to quality music education, and we want to make it a reality.” Doc and Molina said.

NEW ORLEANS (1/13/23) - New Orleans musical Jordan family, represented by Edward "Kidd" Jordan, Kent Jordan, Stephanie Jordan, Rachel Jordan, and Marlon Jordan, have been invited to perform for the 2023 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival by Shell. The Jordan Family Tribute to Kidd Jordan is scheduled for Sunday, April 30, 2023 on the WWOZ Jazz Tent stage.

In a featured story, In Kidd Jordan's family of musicians, it's practice, practice, practice, the New Orleans Times-Picayune writes of the Jordan family's commitment to excellence.  Together, the Jordans are a New Orleans' musical treasure that represents the breadth and depth of the Crescent City's musical talent.
Legendary saxophonist Sir Edward "Kidd" Jordan is acclaimed internationally as one of the true master improvisers still performing today. Jordan was recognized as a jazz maverick back in the 1940s intent on exploring jazz-rooted music's outer reaches. This virtuoso unselfishly shared his gift of and passion for music for more than 50 years, 34 (1972 – 2006) of which he spent at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) until he retired in 2006 as head of the jazz studies program.

The Improvisation Arts Quintet, a group he founded in 1975 with drummer Alvin Fielder, bassist London Branch, trumpeter Clyde Kerr, and saxophonist Alvin Thomas has recorded a remarkable catalog of free-flowing instinctive interactive avant-garde music.

Jordan earned a degree in music from Southern University Baton Rouge in 1955, a master's from Millikin University, and later pursued post-graduate summer studies with Fred Hempke at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Jordan organized the first World Saxophone Quartet in 1976 that included saxophonists Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and David Murray, accompanied by Alvin Fielder (drums), Elton Heron (electric bass), and London Branch (bass)… Jordan has amassed a discography of over 30 recordings and has performed in jazz and music festivals around the world including Germany, Netherlands, Finland, France, and Africa. Kidd has been featured with the New Orleans Philharmonic and booked as a regular performer at the Visions Festival in New York.

Citing him as a visionary educator and performer, the French Government recognized Jordan in 1985 as a Knight (Chevalier) of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, their nation's highest honor. In May of 2017, Jordan received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Loyola University New Orleans─ a distinction reserved at Loyola for eminent individuals whose lives of achievement and service exemplify the philosophy of Jesuit education.

For the past three decades, Jordan has had a highly productive and close relationship with the late drummer Alvin Fielder and bassist William Parker. Jordan developed a close musical relationship with innovative pianist Joel Futterman back in the early 90s, and they continued to perform and record together. Jordan's first recording was titled "No Compromise," which accurately expresses his conviction about his music.

The list of artists he has performed with reads like a 40-year Grammy program. It includes Cannonball Adderley, Fred Anderson, Ornette Coleman, Ed Blackwell, Ellis Marsalis, Ray Charles, Cecil Taylor, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Archie Shepp, Aaron Neville, Sun Ra, Peter Korvald, Alan Silva, Louis Moholo, Sunny Murray, Lena Horne, Gladys Knight, Big Maybelle, and Aretha Franklin. Jordan founded the Improvisational Arts Ensemble with Alvin Fielder, Clyde Kerr, Jr. and London Branch and later added Alvin Thomas.

Jordan was honored with Offbeat magazine's 1st Lifetime Achievement Award for Music Education, and CBS' 60 Minutes documented his musical contribution on air. In 2008, Southern University at New Orleans Foundation honored Jordan during their annual BASH III and Jordan received a Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the Vision Festival XIII in New York City. In 2013, the Jazz Journalist Association named Jordan, a "Jazz Hero."

The "Last Trane to New Orleans," produced by Kidd's daughter Rachel Jordan during the onset of COVID in 2020, is a culmination of Kidd Jordan's body of work – expressed both in his approach to spontaneous composition and the impact of his example on the next generation of improvisers. This album showcases Jordan's Avant-garde style and depicts his life experiences.

On Kidd's 87th birthday on May 5, 2022, the New Orleans City Council proclaimed May 5th Edward "Kidd" Jordan Day in the City of New Orleans.

Mr. Jordan's teaching continues to build an everlasting legacy, former well-known students include Wynton and Bradford Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Donald Harrison, Charles Joseph, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Leroy Adams, Calvin Johnson, Sammie "Big Sam" William, Courtney Bryan, and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah.

Other former students include; Brian Quezergue, Kenneth Anderson, Andrew Baham, Paul Batiste, Peter Batiste, Russell Batiste Jr., Alonza Bowens, Neal Dominque, Joe Dyson, Kurt Ford, Natasha Harris, Arthur Mitchell, Aja Mohammed, Conan Pappas, Usie Phillips, Wesley Phillips, Khristopher Royal, Chris Severin, Vernon Severin, Troy Sawyer, Walter Smith, III, Tony Villon, Richard Moten, Louis Bibbs, Abe Compson, Wali Abbel Ra'oof, Safi Ra'oof, Gregory Agid, Sarina Taylor, Bazile Williams, Ervin Williams, Glenny Massie, Rodney Massie, George Verret, LeRoy Haynes, Edward Francis, Robert Roy, Ed Berrin, Vandell Andrew, Gregory Davis and many, many others.

Mr. Jordan's dedication to music education can safely be described as unmatched; his commitment to his family has been immeasurable. Through the years, he has been able to boast of being the husband of Edvidge Chatters Jordan and the father of Edward, Jr., Kent, Christie, Paul, Stephanie, Rachel, and Marlon. Four of the Jordan children are well-known professional musicians: Kent, a master flutist; Stephanie, a noted jazz singer; Rachel, a classical violinist; and Marlon, an acclaimed jazz trumpeter.
Flutist Kent Jordan is a virtuoso flautist who is undeniably fluent in jazz and classical music. His mastery of the flute and his fluency in classical and jazz performance was clear from age 16, when he was selected to perform Flight of the Bumblebee with the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra.

Kent has performed with famed drummer, Elvin Jones and is a solo recording artist on CBS Records. Jordan has performed with Kevin Eubanks, Alvin Batiste, Branford Marsalis, and on Grammy-winning cd "Hot House Flowers" with Wynton Marsalis. As writer Khephra Burns states, "The clear, authoritative voice that was uniquely his from his debut recordings has grown richer…”

Kent, like his father Kidd Jordan, is dedicated to Jazz education and teaches at The Willow School (formerly Lusher High School) in New Orleans, as well as serving as an instructor at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage School of Music. He also teaches the big band and flute curriculums at the Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. Jordan is a graduate of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts High School (NOCCA) in New Orleans and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.
Vocalist Stephanie Jordan, whom critics have placed in the company of Diana Krall and Dianne Reeves, began to receive noted prominence following the national televised Jazz at Lincoln Center Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina. “On that memorable night; none sang with greater authority or emotional resonance than Stephanie Jordan (accompanied by Kent, Marlon, and Rachel), who enthralled the packed house and a national PBS NPR audience of millions with an ascendant reading of “Here’s to Life.”  Bill Milkowski of JazzTimes Magazine writes “Stephanie Jordan, a standout here, was the real discovery of the evening. Her haunting rendition of this bittersweet ode associated with Shirley Horn was delivered with uncanny poise and a depth of understated soul that mesmerized the crowd...Singing with a clarity of diction that recalled Nat “King” Cole.”

Jordan brought the concert to its climax with impeccable diction, dead-center pitch, and a personal point of view, acknowledging Horn’s antecedent version while drawing independent conclusions about tempo, phrasing, and dynamics. In the process, Jordan… revealed a fully evolved tonal personality, one that can be mentioned in a conversation about such distinguished mentors and influences as Horn, Abbey Lincoln, and Nancy Wilson.”

Stephanie’s current show continues her signature trademark of singing jazz standards from the Big Band era. It includes highlights from her self-produced CD; “Stephanie Jordan Sings A Tribute to Lena Horne” which honors the legendary Grammy Award winner who starred in many films.  She has performed on such stellar stages as the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the NBA All-Star Game, Chicago's Harris Theater, the Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, “The Palace” Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey, and the inaugural International Jazz Day which was celebrated by millions worldwide and live on NPR’s Talk of the NationAudix microphones proclaimed her "Lady Jazz!"

A graduate of Howard University, Stephanie is also a certified fitness instructor and creator of Jazz Pilates. Jordan is Choir Director and Vocal Instructor at a local elementary school.
Trumpeter Marlon Jordan was one of the "Young Jazz Lions" who were signed, recorded and promoted on major record labels. He recorded three impressive LPs for Columbia from 1998 to 1992, For You Only; named "one of the best debut albums of the year" by the Washington PostLearson's Return, and The Undaunted, and one for the Arabesque label entitled Marlon's Mode in 1997. "The comparisons of Jordan's style to artists such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane put him in the upper echelon of jazz history. He has the resume and the style that would be hard, if not impossible, for anyone of his own generation to beat."

His last album, Marlon Jordan featuring Stephanie Jordan, You Don't Know What Love Is announced the return of an exceptional trumpeter. “This dancing and delicious document reveal a mature artist who sounds like himself. You can hear Jordan's clean, boppish lines laced with power, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the entire jazz trumpet tradition, signed in his own unique sonic signature. The setting for this session finds its precedent in the immortal jazz albums, Clifford Brown with Strings, and Bird with Strings.”

During his earlier days, Marlon had the day-to-day inspiration of Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, and many others to draw on. The young musicians often hung out at the Jordan household where they would practice music with Kent Jordan and take lessons from Kidd.

An accomplished classical musician as well, Marlon has performed solo with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, but his true joy is his constant performance in the streets and nightclubs of New Orleans and Brazil. Marlon took his quintet on the road, joining Wynton Marsalis, Miles Davis and George Benson as a headlining act in a series of JVC Festivals produced by George Wein in Atlanta, Dallas and other cities. They also played in some of the country's top jazz clubs, including the Blue Note and the Ritz, highlighted by a run at the Village Vanguard.

Marlon has also performed at Carnegie Hall, and has toured in Japan and China on the JVC Jazz Festivals which featured Miles Davis, David Sanborn, The Yellow Jackets and SunRa.

Marlon graduated from the famed New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA).
Rounding out the Jordan clan is classical violinist Rachel Jordan who serves as the String Instructor for the Talented Music Program at Jefferson Parish Public School and is a member of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in Houston, Texas, and the James Carter Quartet at Loyola University in New Orleans. Rachel has served as adjunct faculty at Xavier University, Southern University, and Dillard University, Loyola University, and a Professor of Violin at Jackson State University. She is also a former member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in New Orleans for 12 years. She received both her Bachelor of Music and her Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where she studied with Berl Senofsky. Rachel is a graduate of New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts High School (NOCCA).

Rachel has performed with her siblings for Jazz at Lincoln Center Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert, as well as numerous concerts throughout the United States. Ms. Jordan performs on and is the executive producer of the Marlon Jordan Featuring Stephanie Jordan CD titled "You Don't Know What Love Is." In addition, Ms. Jordan co-manages J Group Consulting, a family music management entity.

Rachel has been a featured performer in numerous solo recitals, most notable the Kennedy Center, the Mozart Festival in Salzburg, Austria, the Music Center of Houston, the Mozart Festival in Washington, D.C. While at Jackson State, Rachel performed, "The Lark Ascending" with Jackson State University Orchestra for the Congressional Black Caucus Inaugural Ceremony of President Barack Obama.

While at Dillard University, Rachel started the Jesse Dent Recital series, which features African American Musicians performing classical music. She also produces the annual "An Afternoon of Classical Music" chamber music series.  She is also the founding director and artistic director of the "Music Alive Ensemble", a classical and jazz ensemble of musicians, composers, and arrangers.
Stephanie adds, "it is always an honor to perform with the entire family, and in this instance, it is such an auspicious occasion being that it’s on International Jazz Day. My family has been there from the very beginning, and we have done our best to help keep this art form that New Orleans gave to the world alive. We are excited to be a part of this special celebration."
