The horseshoe crab has been using high tide and a full moon as a calendar for 350 million years. June is when they return to Maryland's ocean shoreline. Here one female can lay 20,000 eggs, most of which provide food for other creatures.

Despite their menacing armor and pointed tail, horseshoe crabs are gentle creatures that neither bite nor sting.
