Hummingbirds are attracted to flowers for the sweet nectar and are therefore responsible for pollinating plants in our food supply! Besides nectar from flowers and bird feeders, they also eat beetles, ants, aphids, gnats, mosquitoes, and wasps.
In Maryland we typically see these small birds, which weigh about the same as a penny, from May through September, at which time they fly off to the warmer climate of Mexico and Central America.
