DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Avoiding Awkward Wedding Moments

The planning is complete, the rehearsal is over, and it is now Show Time! Yes, the couple getting married are the center of attention, and the ceremony and reception are the stages. All eyes are on the bride and groom and the photographer and videographer are there to capture every moment, even the moments that sometimes can turn into 'awkward wedding moments'.

To help avoid having that "this is awkward" or "what do we do" moment in a video clip or in a photo, be sure to address the following items before the wedding day.

Who gives this bride away?
Make sure before the rehearsal, the escort of the bride knows the 'exchange or handoff' (hugs, handshakes, when to sit down, etc.)

Rings: Who has them?
Decide before the rehearsal who will carry or hold the wedding bands and provide them to the officiant for the ring ceremony.

Unity Candle: Who lights them?
Traditionally, the mothers (or family representatives) of the couple light taper candles. The couple will take the taper candles to light one unity candle. Light the unity candle together, then place the taper candles back in their holder, and leave them lit.

Cutting the Cake: How do we do this?
The bride and groom should stand at an angle with the cake table (still allow for a good backdrop), with the bride in front, so the cake does not hide them in the photo. The groom will hold the knife and the bride will place her left hand (show the new bling!) on top of his as they both cut the first piece of cake.

CHOOSING YOUR LIVE MUSIC

Music is all around us: we hear it while we are shopping, sitting for an appointment, or watching TV. Marketers use music to grab your attention. Music affects our moods, helps set the tone of an event and draws our attention.

Having live music at weddings is one of the most beautiful touches in a ceremony. Many times, as guests are gathering for a wedding, it turns into a mini social segment as guest talk with friends and family they might not have seen for a while. Often when that happens, it is difficult to get everyone's attention to take their seats before the start of the ceremony. That is where live music is a benefit to the event: the musicians can crescendo into a piece that brings guests' attention to the altar.

Once the ceremony starts, the live musicians can play through the duration of professional. Often, couples forget to time their music with the number of people walking down the aisle. With live music, you don't have to worry if the favorite song you have chosen is long enough for the processional as musicians can transition easily from one song to the next.

In planning your wedding, think about adding live music as elements that will impact your entire event. If your wedding and reception are on the same property, think about the transition from place to place. You might surprise your guests with live music during the cocktail hour.

There are all types of music to match your wedding style. For a sophisticated or classy attire, one might choose classical music for the background of the cocktail hour while a more refined and artistic event might have a Jazz band.

Fast forward to your first dance as a newly married couple. You can have the same recording we all have heard over and over on the radio or, with live music, you can create a special moment by having a unique performance designed for the two of you.
