Captain's Corner
Written by Captain Kevin Deerman
We have had some nice mild weather on the Gulf Coast lately but we still haven't had any of the really big fronts push through yet. The high pressure systems that we've seen have been either too close together or not large enough to give us a weather window to go fishing. The weather has also affected our bird hunting with Whitewing dove hanging around for a few weeks into regular season (which was great!), but the Mourning dove numbers have been down compared to the past few years. Duck and deer season is about to kick off this week. We are hoping for a good push from the north pretty soon, not only to get some more birds down this way but also to give us one or two more chances to get out for some bluewater fishing before the end of the year.
The Learning Curve
Written by Captain Troy Day
As we enter fall and the focus for most has turned to hunting, now is a good time to look at safety gear and inspections before wahoo season arrives and cold water temps make safety gear all the more important.  Here are a few items to check:
  • Life raft service date (most manufacturers recommend service every 3 years) and have it serviced/repacked if needed
  • EPIRB and PLB batteries (they are good for 5 years)
  • Flares (service life is 42 months)
  • Lights on PFD's - replace batteries, verify function
  • Crash pump function
The first wahoo window may open during deer season and sneak up on us.  Here's to hoping we all get out a couple times before Christmas!
