I believe Black History Month is important to many people. It is important to me because it's a month where we can recognize the achievement and milestones of African Americans. Through their hardships and achievements they have been able to open the doors to minorities. Those doors have lead to success and many great careers.

Black history month is important to me because it is an opportunity for African Americans and people of other ethnic groups to learn about the many contributions and accomplishments of African Americans to education, science, and social justice in the United States. Black History month serves as a celebration of African American culture and as a reminder of what it means to have determination, courage and integrity as an African-American.

Black history month is important because it is a month to reflect on African American history and accomplishments- many that have been overlooked in the past. For example, the traffic light, something we use every day, was invented by a black business man named Garret Morgan. There are tons of black scientists, entrepreneurs, athletes, actors, politicians, and more that did amazing things as well. Some examples are, Madam C.J Walker, Muhammad Ali, Marian Anderson, and Arthur Ashe. All of whom deserve to be honored and remembered as hope for the black community and as inspiration to all.

TSIC Goes to Busch Gardens!
Busch Gardens generously
donated 100 Tickets to HEF
in celebration of National Mentoring Month. On Saturday, January 25th mentors and mentees got to spend time with each other while riding roller coasters, petting kangaroos, and participating in a scavenger hunt, all while enjoying one of the most beautiful days of the year- there was not a cloud in sight all day!
Thank you to all of those that participated and made the event such a success! Once again, we want to give a huge

Florida College Tour
Only Open to TSIC Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors!
The Hillsborough Education Foundation is excited to host a Take Stock in Children Two Day Florida College Tour.
The overnight tour on March 16th and 17th will consist of four universities: FGCU, FIU, FAU, UCF. Transportation, Food, and Lodging will be provided. The tour will be open to
current Juniors (
class of 2021) in the Take Stock in Children program. This tour is a great opportunity to ask questions and imagine what it would be like to attend your desired school.
Please note:
RSVP'ing does not guarantee students a spot on the trip. They will receive a confirmation email letting them know if they are confirmed to attend or if they are being placed on a wait-list. All students who wish to attend must submit a signed waiver at least 1 week advance. An email will be sent before the event with the minor waiver attachment.

MENTOR OF THE MONTH

How did you become involved with mentoring through the Hillsborough Education Foundation?
I saw a feature about the program on the news. I had just relocated to the Tampa area from Annapolis Md and was looking for a way to stay involved in education after taking early retirement as a school social worker to care for my Mom. The program sounded perfect. I went to the training session and was so impressed with the TSIC staff I knew I had to be part of whatever they implemented for supporting
students.
What has been the most rewarding part of mentoring?
Getting to know my amazing mentee Diana. Diana is focused on her goals and works very hard to achieve
them. Not only is she maintaining her grades to have a GPA of 3.1, (which she wants to be higher) she is involved in ROTC, plays on the flag football team AND she works part time. I often am at a loss what I can offer to Diana as she is already thriving and reaching her goals.
Our first year together, Diana was placed in an advanced Algebra class. She loves Math and excelled in middle school. However, she was struggling in this Algebra class and it was causing her to hate math. She was really frustrated and scared she would fail. We talked about possible solutions and she came up with asking her former math teacher to tutor her at lunch. He agreed! She went a couple times a week for the second semester. She ended up with a B in the class and maintained her love for math! Not many 9th grade students would do that!
I am so excited to see the places Diana will go!
What do you believe is the key to being a quality mentor?
Listening and taking the time to know your student and allowing the relationship to build. We used the activities in the books TSIC gave me during the orientation training. They were the perfect way to find commonalities and start conversations. I could tell by the second meeting Diana was resilient and had lots of strengths. My role as her mentor would be to assist her in brainstorming resources and solutions to barriers that she may face during her high school career. She is a person who wants to do things on her own and find her own solutions. Letting Diana decide for herself instead of telling her what to do has demonstrated that I trust her and her judgement. This in turn has given her more confidence in her abilities. She is already talking about the leadership roles she wants to take in ROTC as a Junior and Senior.
When you are not working with students, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
I like to take advantage of all Florida has to offer outdoors! I love to be outside and
active especially on
the water sailing or kayaking. I have finally gotten used to seeing gators when I kayak. The state parks
are amazing and voted as the best parks in the Country so I like to visit them and camp as much
as possible. I also love riding my Indian Scout motorcycle but NOT on the Interstates! LOL
What do you hope your mentee will learn from you?
My hope is that Diana will recognize and utilize her strengths and her leadership qualities to achieve her
goals and reach her dreams and never give up when doors seem closed. We spend a lot of our time talking about the power of having a positive attitude and outlook on life especially when times seem difficult. As the good witch Glinda said to Dorothy, "You've always had the power my dear, you just had to
learn it for yourself"

Resources to Prepare for
College Entrance Tests
Many Universities require students to take either the SAT or ACT, what students score on those tests
 plays
a role in determining the likelihood of their acceptance into certain Universities. According to College Board, data shows that
studying for the SAT® for 20 hours on free Official SAT
Practice on Khan Academy is associated with an average score gain of 115 points, nearly double the average score gain compared to students who don't use Khan Academy.
Below, you will find several resources that students can use to improve their SAT/ACT scores:
- Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a free, online service that has partnered with College Board to provide students with SAT practice materials. If students are interested in learning more, please download and print the following PDF. It contains information on how to sign up!

- Test Prep Books & Flash Cards: HEF recently purchased SAT & ACT test prep books and flash-cards to help students who want to improve their SAT and/or ACT score. If your mentee is interested in borrowing a book or flashcard set please have them connect with their assigned College Success Coach, their CSC will bring the materials to their school. Their email addresses are listed below:
- My College QuickStart: My College QuickStart is a personalized online college and career planning kit available free of charge to all students who take the PSAT/NMSQT. One of the features is an enhanced score report allows students to review each test question, their answers, and the correct answers with answer explanations. Students can also sort questions by various criteria, such as questions answered incorrectly or omitted and find out their projected SAT score range.
- KARA Tutoring: Kara tutoring is a not-for-profit organization that provides free, high-quality tutoring to low-income students worldwide for a variety of topics and subjects such as the SAT, ACT, APs, IB, TOEFL, and IELTS. Many of the tutors on the site are students themselves who have excelled in their college entrance exams.

Graduation Rates Continue to Climb
Students in Hillsborough County Public Schools are continuing to get better jobs, with higher wages, after graduation - by earning high school diplomas at a record rate for five straight years.
Today, the state released graduation rates and Hillsborough students showed gains - for the fifth year in a row - pushing our district's graduation rate to 86.2%, an increase from the prior year and an all-time record high.
