FEBRUARY 2024 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents,

As we step into the month of March, we are bubbling with excitement for the arrival of spring and the halfway mark of the school year! It's a time for renewal, growth, and celebration, and we have a lot in store for our HSA School Community.

Firstly, March brings with it two important observances: National Reading Month and Women's History Month. We are thrilled to honor both of these occasions throughout the month, weaving them into our curriculum and activities to inspire and educate our students.

Additionally, we are gearing up for the testing season, with the IAR exam, as well as our HS PSAT and SAT exams, scheduled for this month. We want to assure you that our students are well-prepared, thanks to the dedication of our staff. As parents, your support is invaluable. Please ensure your children get plenty of rest, eat a nutritious breakfast, stay hydrated, and arrive at school on time. Encourage them to take their time during the exams, as we believe in their abilities to succeed.

Your feedback is crucial to us, which is why we're requesting your input in the 5Essential Survey. Your thoughts help us shape our strategies for continuous improvement. Please take a few moments to complete the survey

Beyond academics, we have some fantastic family events lined up that we hope you'll join us for. Mark your calendars for the PTO Family Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 9th, from 9:30 am to 12 pm. We're also thrilled to host our Family STEM Night on March 14th from 5-7 pm and our highly anticipated Family Literacy Night on March 21st from 5-7 pm. These events are not only fun but essential for building our school community.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in your child's education. Together, we're creating a vibrant and thriving learning environment at HSA McKinley Park. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Warm regards,

Mr. Vedziovski

USHLI Conference

Our high school students attended the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute National Conference on February 15th. The amazing motivational conference addressed many of the issues currently affecting the Latino community and had a great lineup of nationally prominent speakers and expert presenters. It was a great opportunity for our students. Thank you to Ms. Camacho for arranging for our students to attend the conference again this year.

K-4 Drama Show

On February 29th, our K-4 Drama students performed their "We're All In This Together" Show for families and friends. Thank you to Ms. Bearden, and Ms. Kolevska, for putting together this amazing show. Our students knocked our socks off!

But wait, our Drama Club will still perform this year! We are looking forward to our Middle School Drama students and their production of The Little Mermaid coming this May.

Celebrating School Counselor Day

As we celebrated National School Counselors Week this month, we wanted to express our deep appreciation to our amazing Counseling Team!

  • Ms. Juanita Camacho
  • Ms. Amra Imamovic
  • Ms. Maya Trinka

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your amazing efforts and contributions to the success of our students! We have the best team of counselors!

Model UN

This year, our HS Model UN Team represented Azerbaijan at the 36th annual Model UN Conference at the University of Chicago. There were over 2,500 students who participated from schools all around the globe.

At the conference, our students had the chance to meet with students worldwide, learn about international relations, and solve real-world problems. This conference was highly competitive, and our students did a fantastic job representing our school. We are proud of all of them for their hard work in preparation for the conference.

100 Days Smarter!

Our elementary team honored our annual 100 days of school celebration with our students. As an HSA tradition, every year we host a K-2 100 day parade. All of our students looked great and some of our staff also joined in the fun and dressed up too! We love this parade and are happy we can share this milestone with our elementary students.

Art Winners

We are so proud of our art students who participated in this year's CONSEF Art Design contest.

Congratulations to our students who placed this year:

  • Maya Bucio won 3rd place in the Junior Division

and our 2 runners-up:

  • Lupita Grimaldo-Uribe & Safiya Abdurakhmoni

Blind Date with a Book

Our high school event, "Blind Date with a Book" was back again this year for our students to enjoy. Our students had the opportunity to come by on Valentine's Day to pick up a book without knowing the author or title. To choose their "blind date book"  Ms. Manzella set up a set of clues that were handwritten on the wrapping paper of the book. A special shout out to our school libriarian, Ms. Manzella for organizing and including our older students in our Love for Literacy efforts.

Family Love Dance

Thank you to the families that joined us for the Family Love dance. It was a great night to share with the families of HSA. The night was filled with great food and music. Our students danced the night away and we loved seeing their smiley faces.

Basketball Season Recap

Varsity Boys Basketball finished their first year under new head coach Tommie Meyers with nine wins. Senior Brandon Causey became the first Horizon athlete to be named to a Lakeshore Athletic League All-Conference team. JV Basketball finished the season with an 8-5 record and a second place finish in the LSAL JV Playoffs.

College & Career Corner

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates regarding the progress of scholarships for our outstanding Class of 2024 students! It is with great pride that we announce that our Seniors are close to reaching 9 million dollars in scholarships collectively earned by our ambitious and hardworking students.

In addition to celebrating our students' achievements, we have had the privilege of hosting various guests to promote different colleges and trade programs. Most recently, we welcomed representatives from Universal Technical Institute, providing our students with valuable insights into exciting career opportunities in technology and trades.

As we embark on the spring season, our students will have the opportunity to attend more college visits in the coming months.
