“A strong woman is one who feels deeply and loves fiercely. Her tears flow as abundantly as her laughter. A strong woman is both soft and powerful, she is both practical and spiritual. ... “A strong woman loves, forgives, walks away, lets go, tries again, and perseveres… no matter what life throws at her.”
Celebrating Women's History Month
We welcome March and honor this month, Woman’s History Month, and the evolution of its past which has been woven into the lives, opportunities and capability that women have inherited. Every March since 1987, Congress and U.S. Presidents have designated the month of March as Women's History Month. In recognition of the vital role that woman have played throughout history and within society, it is a testament to the accomplishments and important contributions women have made over the years. Our journey as women around the world who have empowered us to improve our viability, remains a reminder that while a lot has been achieved, the journey is long and more needs to be done. I personally am whole-hardheartedly grateful for the courageous women who marched for and won the right to vote, campaigned against injustice, shattered countless barriers, and expanded the possibilities of American life for women.
"International Women's Day", recently celebrated on March 8th was dedicated to acknowledge the economic, political, social and cultural achievements of women from all walks of life. It was celebrated globally, highlighting the struggles and accomplishments of women who have brought us this day.
As women we must continue to elevate ourselves as we advance to take on the challenges to excel in what we do and how we move further toward equality. As we proceed to inspire each other we must make a conscious effort each and every day, and with each and every interaction, to approach people, topics and situations with altruism in our heart — for both for ourselves and for others and handle negative situations with words of kindness and acts of grace and respect. We have come a long way yet still have a long way to go......and we will do it!
In Wellness,
Ilana

"Voice-It" Spa Talk with Mitchell
Cultivating Culture:
|
|
Where I work we have a Culture Card. It tells new staff our core values, mission statement and vision. But in its last incarnation, this usually forgettable and mundane component to a club’s culture got a creative shot in the arm. We asked the management team to personify our culture using an “acrostic,” where the letters that make up our club’s name also start a sentence that exemplifies our club’s culture. Suddenly, managers were busy scribbling ideas, networking and a living manifesto that was easy to remember, and more likely to stick emerged. As I present our clubs example, I urge you to give it a try at your club or spa at your next manager’s meeting.
- Personalize every resident interaction.
- Open Communication strengthens our operation.
- Respect everyone’s opinion.
- The strength of our team is each member.
- Ownership of each situation ensures excellent results.
- Value diversity & diversify to enhance value.
- Initiate every interaction with an atmosphere of hospitality.
- The strength of each member is the team.
- Always see the moment through the lens of our residents.

FSMTA meets with Florida State Legislators
|
|
In February, the FSMTA Legislative Team met with several key members of the Florida Legislature to promote the massage therapy profession. Due to covid all of these meetings were through zoom. The 2021 Legislative session started last week. The FSMTA has a bill in both the house and the senate, which consists mostly of language cleanup. During the first committee meeting the bill passed unanimously. We will have more information to share as the Legislative session progresses.
The FSMTA Legislative Team was also able to enlist the assistance of a legislator to communicate with the governor's office the need for new members on the Florida Board of Massage. The Board of Massage is supposed to consist of 7 members, currently the board only as 4. Most of the terms of the remaining members expired several years ago. These members have agreed to extend their commitment in order to maintain a functioning board. Florida LMTs that would be interested in applying to be on the Board of Massage please have them contact the following for more information: legislativechair@fsmta.org

April Smith
Spa Director at Spa Lilliana
Hotel Effie, Destin, FL
We are very excited to feature our very good friend April in this month’s FSA Spa Spotlight and also announce her new position at the new luxury hotel on the white sand beaches off Florida’s Gulf Coast. A savvy and highly experienced professional with solid leadership skills in the spa community, April has proven herself many times over as being a front-runner in a variety of positions within the industry. Having started in Business Development at WTS International in 2002, writing proposals and contracts for new clients and prospecting new business for spas, fitness centers and tennis clubs, April went on to becoming the Assistant Spa Director at Peter Island Resort and Spa before taking on her role of over 11 years as Director of Spa and Salon at the ultra-luxury private Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. With proficiency she managed and led her team in all aspects of spa and salon operations increasing revenue year after year while keeping her club members happy. In 2018 April took a leap of faith in her career by stepping over to the vendor side of the spa market, taking on the role as an account executive at NuFace for 3 years, where she found success in selling the brand to spa accounts. After dealing with several month of the pandemic, April came back to her element of passion, spa operations, and now holds the prestigious position of Director of Spa at the new and deluxe Hotel Effie in the Sandestin Resort. “I’m really excited to have this amazing opportunity to open a luxury spa and be a part of a new hotel opening during this pandemic” said April. We are so proud and happy for April as she settles into her new role and know that she will be an valuable asset to her spa.

ReFa began with the conception of a single beauty roller. Was it possible to replicate the professional caliber of an estheticians hand manipulations in the form of a home-use beauty device?
|
|
Meet ReFa, a line of luxury face and body rollers designed with a gentle micro-current for a relaxing facial and body massage. Each ReFa roller targets a different area, from the delicate skin under the eyes, to the temples, between the eyebrows, the jawline and even the neck and shoulders. A ReFa rolling regimen can be used on the body as well, like the arms and thigh area, so you can experience a contouring effect that’s an indulgent way to self-care. It’s like bringing a bit of the spa home with you, for those moments when you need to reset and unwind.
Designed to mimic the facial massage technique of an esthetician, the line of ReFa rollers is platinum-coated and uniquely designed to refine and tone for a more rejuvenated appearance. Rolling is a self-care ritual that just happens to give you a gorgeous glow.

The Convergence of Wellness and Senior Living Spells Opportunity
|
|
Many of you know last August I started my weekly business podcast Glowing Older: Innovation in Senior Living. My biggest takeaway from 3 seasons is that new models of senior living won’t be called senior living at all. The most common objection to moving into senior living is, “I don’t want to live with a bunch of old people.” This sentiment will grow stronger as Boomers find their voice in retirement.
Non-age-segregated models exist today like Merrill Gardens at The University in Seattle is 3 blocks of housing in a triangle comprising seniors, graduate students and non-tenured professors; Kendal Senior Living at Dartmouth, Oberlin, Cornell, Washington and Lee Universities fosters intergenerational connections. The college students and children from the Kendal Early Learning Center enrich residents’ lives.

10 Spa and Wellness Business Trends in 2021
|
|
I’d like to say that we’ll never experience another year like 2020, and I hope I’m correct. The year of “perfect vision” turned out to be anything but, as it became impossible to predict what would happen next in the COVID time machine. Mix in civil unrest, election-year shenanigans, and general discontent with constant change, and that sums it up. Never mind the difficulties purchasing paper towels and toilet paper, just try procuring previously low-demand items such as home fitness equipment, bicycles, small home desks, food processors, or even adopting a pet!
But while 2020 was brutal in many aspects for personal care businesses as well as personal life, there are some definite “humankind” positives moving forward as people have adapted, enjoying more time with family and embracing wellness like never before.
As spas began to reopen across the US in the second half of the year, clients were flocking in. Worries that consumers would be fearful of human touch were unfounded. In fact, it was quite the opposite. The tolls of social distancing, working from home, and widespread lockdowns created a strong desire for human connection that spas were happy to accommodate. Despite curbside check-ins, temperature-taking, mask-wearing, and waiver requirements, clients filled the books of available treatments.

COVID-19 Burnout: Four Ways to Deal with It
Seven in 10 of us are feeling burnout on the job, but the relentless pandemic marches on.
Some steps that may help.
|
|
With pay cuts rampant, work increasing, and fretting about the pandemic, the forces that surround workers today are of course among the most stress inducing. Indeed, by early May, 73% of American professionals were feeling burned-out, according to one survey of 7,000 professionals. The top reasons cited are no surprise: no separation between work and home, unmanageable workloads, and worries over job security.
Certainly, companies are worried about their employees being pushed to the brink, especially if a second major wave of coronavirus cases forces many employees out of the workplace again. But with no end in sight to either the pandemic or the economic disruption it’s caused, employees are increasingly trying to avoid losing focus or letting stress overwhelm them. “For some of us, blurring work and personal life are normal things, but a lot of people have been thrust into this environment and there are major challenges,” says Mark Royal, senior director for Korn Ferry Advisory. Among some steps to try:
