Augment your Life and Mental Wellness
The dominant them in Shakespeare’s “ A Midsummer’s Night Dream” is love….but what does love really mean? It has so many definitions that the list is endless. There’s “people-love” for a spouse, partner, child, parent, friend, etc., when the needs of other people are equal to or come before our own. Genuinely caring about someone else’s happiness. There’s love of animals…who doesn’t adore their fur babies? And there’s love of what we see, feel, experience and do. However we can never forget about self-love and self-care.
So here we are, it’s midsummer, August has arrived and we’re just four months away from 2022. Suffice it to say, time has flown by quickly so what’s different this year and what can we do? Do we just ride the tide this August leaving only a trace of what we’ve done, or do we dig deep into what we love to AUG-ment and enhance our lifestyle, circumstances and think beyond. That’s right, the “aug” in August means to grow bigger or expand.…mainly to “evolve”. We can do many things to make a difference in how we approach our day-to-day living to improve our personal life, relationships and careers. There’s been a lot of focus on mental well-being, not only in our spa industry but on social awareness, especially after coping with stress during a pandemic. Now a leading topic, wellness and a healthy life is beneficial for one's mental health. Identifying healthy lifestyle choices that promote psychological well-being and reduce emotional problems is extremely valuable to prevent mental conditions that result in how we deal with situations. Many existing factors have been known to play a significant role in positively modifying medical and psychiatric illnesses and their associated morbidity and mortality. Some of which include, eating healthy food, greater physical activity, adequate sleep, drinking water and happiness.
With focus on our spa space, loving what you do is not just good for your health and mental wellness but it touches those that you engage with. It allows you to meet people, boosts your self-esteem, and gives you a sense of purpose and identity. The thought of contributing to something larger than yourself can make you feel happy and fulfill your life, provided you are mindful of your own well-being. With recent spa challenges and staffing shortages, it’s important to address and request real-time needs, give and get support from team leaders and associates, and retain top therapists and staff. The FSA dedicates itself to providing current information and solutions to help support our spas by staying connected, collaborating with other establishments that are educational, research driven and involved in state regulations, like the FSMTA and ISPA as well as supportive Vendor Partners that provide for the needs of our spas. FSA is also committed to the welfare of our spa community as an Ambassador for Global Wellness Day which is solely focused on the health and well-being of followers. That comes from the love and devotion for our spa community.
Circling back to our individuality and love, “Aug-ment” your life this “Aug-ust” and embrace your daily routine for the greater good to yourself. Dive into those projects and the activities you’ve put off for months or even years….just get going. Explore those exciting points of interest, take advantage of luxurious spa days that are available to you, spend quality family time or uninterrupted reading. You name it. Whatever your cup of tea – do that!
Your September self will thank you!
Wishing Wellness,
Ilana

A Slice of Compensation Pie
|
|
When you look at your paycheck you go straight to the final number at the bottom of the list of taxes, benefits, etc. & probably think “Wow! Are they getting a good deal on me!” Spa Director’s ego aside, employers actually pay an additional 25% to 35% on top of your hourly or salary pay in the form of part-time or full-time benefits. In this challenging time when pressure to add sign-on bonuses, gift cards, and raising hourly pay to keep or attract staff members, we decided to change our policy during our annual reviews. We now show the staff member a pie chart with their wage, payroll taxes, benefits, employee meals, 401k contribution, uniforms and the slice of the pie each represents. That $15/hour job is actually a $20/hour job when you add in the benefits. When staff see what the company invests in them, you may be able to persuade a possible defecting employee to stay and enjoy a piece of Compensation Pie on their next paid coffee break.
Stay Cheerful! Mitch

Revenue Management in the Spa Industry
By Josh Corman for ISPA’s Pulse magazine
|
|
REVENUE MANAGEMENT HAS BEEN STANDARD PRACTICE in the airline and hotel industries for decades, but the spa industry has been slower to embrace its principles. However, as the industry seeks to move beyond the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and chart a course toward the future, there has never been a better opportunity to once again consider the merits of revenue management, its applicability to spas and its massive potential impact on the industry’s bottom line.
In 1978, The Airline Deregulation Act ended the U.S. Government’s control of airfares, flight routes and other aspects of the airline industry. American Airlines was ready. Since the mid- 1960s, the company had been conducting research to determine how they might maximize revenue from their inventory of flight reservations. Such planning is, of course, critical in the airline industry. Every time a flight leaves its gate with unfilled seats, the revenue those seats represent is gone forever, so ensuring that each flight is as full as possible is key to any airline’s financial success. When the Airline Deregulation Act was passed, airlines suddenly had the power to adjust fare pricing to reflect demand and alter flight routes to serve a greater volume of customers.

Study Suggests Sitting Can Negatively Affect Mental Health
|
|
It goes without saying that the past year has put a strain on mental health worldwide. Not only have we been dealing with a pandemic, but it's led to changes in our day-to-day lives that have subsequently affected our mental health, as well.
Studying the effects of sitting versus exercise.
With fewer activities to do and more people staying home, people everywhere are sitting more and more. For this study, researchers wanted to look at how sitting time and physical activity were affecting mental health (i.e., emotional and psychological well-being).

|
As the world continues to experience drastic climate change effects, more people want to go green. Pitching in to save the planet is an admirable feat that might make you feel better about the future. You’re proud of each bag that ends up in your local recycling plant, but do you know where it goes from there? People have begun to wonder if recycling is good for the environment and what really happens with their household waste.
