“Happiness is a life well lived”
Happiness is a feeling of joy or good fortune; an enjoyable or satisfied state of being. What makes me happy is my family, friends, being productive, embracing wellness and working in our spa industry. Although I admit this does come with its challenges and can be stressful, all in all….. my life’s journey and the people in my orbit make me happy.
So what makes you Happy? It’s a simple question, but with many variables underlying it. What makes anyone happy? Happiness is an important component of overall well-being. It is the most important experience we want for those we love, including ourselves. We always want to be happy and have those around us be happy in whatever endeavor we take on. We need happiness in our lives for many more reasons than just feeling good occasionally.
As we find ourselves slowly easing back from this past year, having lived through a pandemic and now with vaccinations on the rise, we can start to see that shining light at the end of this covid-19 tunnel. I believe we can all agree that we are more than ready to get back to “normal”. Just the thought of being able to engage in life as we previously lived, is a recipe for happiness and will be appreciated more than ever.
Happiness is know to be linked to better decision-making and improved creativity. Rather than viewing success as the key to happiness, research shows that happiness could in fact be the key to success. It doesn't only help us function better, feeling happy brings about significant benefits for society as a whole. When addressing well-being, could happiness be the key to a longer life? Research shows that people who had higher levels of optimism had a longer life span. Studies also show that happiness can be contagious. When a friend experiences happiness or good fortune, those feelings are passed on to the people around them. Happy people tend to cluster together in social groups and seem generally happier because happiness loves company. That’s why we love spa events!
But happiness does depend on ourselves and our outlook as a central purpose for life and as a goal in itself. Happiness starts within and we have the power to choose what we hold onto and what we let go of to find a balance that allows us to feel joy. As the saying goes “happy people don’t have the best of everything, they make the best of everything!”
"People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be” - Abraham Lincoln

"Voice-It" Spa Talk with Mitchell

Not to be one to waste ink and your valuable "eye time" on dumb jokes, but I am writing this to remind us to be silly and humorous whenever possible.
A running joke at my spa is our fall back phrase, "I love working in a spa, it is sooo relaxing!" This is usually said after a tense moment or "stepping on a landmine" (finding a mis-booked appointment too late to fix it without blowing up the schedule).
Simply put, humor in the face of crash and burn situations helps us cope, put things in a larger perspective and set the stage for a clear-minded solution. Let's face it friends, by running a spa we are not directly solving world hunger or curing cancer. But if we are diligent we will make the world a better place one massage, facial or personal training session at a time.
In the words of the late, great American philosopher, Joan Rivers, "If we can laugh about it, we can begin to talk about it." Keep on laughing!

FSMTA meets with Florida State Legislators
|
|
The Florida Board of Massage Therapy (BOMT) met April 8 and 9. There were several disciplinary cases as well as rules discussions to update commonly used forms (e.g. Application for Massage Therapist licensure, Massage Establishment Licenses). Two new BOMT members were added, pending confirmation by a senate committee. The BOMT is now complete with these two additions.
On August 31 of this year all Massage Licenses and Establishment Licenses are required to renew. Please feel free to share the following link with all of your LMTs to ensure they are educated on the requirements for this renewal cycle.
On April 1 the Massage Therapy bill (HB245) passed in the Florida House unanimously. The companion bill in the Florida Senate (SB352) currently has one committee before it heads to the Senate floor for a vote. In both bills the main purpose is updating and modernizing the Massage Therapy Practice Act. One other change would be the addition of the term assessment and its definition.
If you have any questions pertaining to Law or Rules pertaining to Florida Massage Therapy please feel free to contact legislativechair@fsmta.org

TAKING THE NATURAL COURSE
On The Green CBD is pioneering the use of natural hemp extracts to improve performance of the refined athlete
|
|
All sports performance is measured in fine margins. Every small improvement in performance can knock one or two strokes off your round of golf, or help you run that extra mile in record time. The products made by On The Green CBD can offer those improvements. The company was the brainchild of Nick Fishenden, a golf lover from England who moved to the US in 2008 to attend the Golf Academy of America, where he obtained his degree in Golf Management. Nick turned pro before a back injury ended his dream of a professional career, and he started working in the fledgling cannabidiol (CBD) industry. This takes cannabidiol, a compound extracted from hemp, and uses it to treat a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain to anxiety. In 2019, Nick put his two interests together and created On The Green CBD, a company that makes CBD products tailored specifically to meet the needs of golfers.

“Health is Wealth” What good is all the money in the world without good health? You may be thinking “I could make it work with $”. I have news for you. Many of my clients over the past 30 years were some of the wealthiest people in their community, some even in the world.
Evidence of their poor lifestyles took a toll on their health, mobility, and freedom. By then there was little they could do about it. Other clients realized this and put their health above everything else. It is a choice.
That said why live longer if we haven’t made up our minds to take better care of our health? But if you have made that commitment let’s look at a combination of information educating us on our choices as we age to ensure we make the right choices based on accurate information.
We have choices but if we don’t make the right ones, we don’t get the health we want. As in my Lifestyle article titled “50’s is the new 30’s” the fact is we are living longer so let’s make it a great quality of life!

Earth Day 2021: What and When is Earth Day?
Earth Day has been celebrated around the world since 1970 by people from all walks of life who are concerned about preserving the environment. Check out these great ideas!
|
|
Earth Day is Thursday, April 22, 2021. The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970, when 20 million people across America celebrated by filling their local streets, parks and auditoriums to demand a healthy, sustainable environment. They were concerned about their cities laden with smog, polluted rivers, rampant pollution, and other environmental hazards.
Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated around the world, by people from all walks of life who are concerned about making a sustainable future for their children. In the past, events, festivals and overall awareness campaigns mark the day, with the hope of preserving the environment.

A Word from our Spa Community
|
|
Greetings from Allan Share
"Hey friends, I'm so glad to be writing to you as we come out of the pandemic (I hope a year we never repeat). Many things, good and bad, came out of the previous 12 months, here's a short list. Retail has been fantastic. If your spa facility had a good online presence it helped keep you alive and prosper. Those who didn't have a selling site, now have one! You found out what staff were up to the challenge...and which were not. Education and training were increased by many and now a better staff is going back to work. Zoom, Skype and Microsoft Teams have become part of our everyday lexicon (and use). Trade shows were not, and now will be again. The list goes on and on, but my main takeaway is this; we're flexible as an industry, we're dedicated to survival, we know what good people look like, we're oriented to education...and we're resilient. Welcome back to the spa channel!"
