Kingsbriar Greenbelt Tree Planting: A Growing Tradition!
For the second consecutive year, the Public Works Department led a successful tree-planting initiative at Kingsbriar Greenbelt near Stonehurst Plaza. Approximately twenty volunteers joined forces to plant fifteen Tristania trees while learning how to use post-drivers to secure stakes and safeguard the trees during their growth. Tree planting not only enhances our community by improving air quality and providing shade but also contributes to the creation of a more aesthetically pleasing environment. A heartfelt thank you to all who participated in making Yorba Linda greener and healthier.

Yorba Linda Planning Commission Recommends General Plan Amendments and Zoning Code Amendments
On May 15, 2024, the Yorba Linda Planning Commission held a public hearing and voted to recommend that the City Council adopt the proposed General Plan Amendments and Zoning Code Amendments outlined in the revised 2021-2029 Housing Element. In advancing this recommendation, the action will further achieve compliance with State mandates that will help Yorba Linda retain local control over land use decisions.
The City Council will now hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to consider the proposed zoning amendments. If the City Council votes to advance the revised Housing Element, voters will ultimately determine whether the zoning changes are adopted via a ballot measure in November 2024. This step aligns with Measure B, Yorba Linda’s Right-to-Vote Amendment, which allows voters to approve or reject major adjustments to the City’s land use documents. A public hearing notice was mailed to all Yorba Linda residents.
Community Meetings
The City has completed its second series of community meetings. Each meeting included comprehensive Q&A sessions with robust discussions and strong community engagement around the Housing Element and how it will impact Yorba Linda’s housing future. Meeting materials and recordings are posted on the website at YLLocalControl.com/Workshops.
Housing Element Resources
To help the community better understand housing policy in California, the City has created a housing policy video, outlining State housing mandates and Yorba Linda’s efforts to maintain local control. The City also published a supplemental video regarding Builder’s Remedy, a State legal provision that prevents Yorba Linda’s local control over housing developments.
For more details on the Housing Element, upcoming meetings, and how to stay engaged, visit YLLocalControl.com or contact YLHousingElement@yorbalindaca.gov.

Over the course of approximately four months, the project will include a combination of slurry seal and asphalt overlay treatments. Residents will receive advance notice as there will be temporary parking and access restrictions during certain phases. Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to elevate Yorba Linda’s neighborhood infrastructure.

Safeguarding Your Vehicles Against Theft
Yorba Linda Police Services has noticed a rise in high-value vehicle thefts, a trend seen nationwide due to the quick methods thieves use to steal cars for their high resale value. These sophisticated criminals can gain entry and access the vehicle’s electronic system through the OBD2 port in just minutes. To help protect your car, follow these tips:
- Park in a secure garage when possible;
- When parking in the driveway, ensure the area is well-lit and covered by cameras;
- Install an OBD2 blocker to deter thieves;
- Consider a secondary GPS device or tracking device like an Apple AirTag; and
- Always close windows, lock doors, remove valuables, and use a steering lock device.
If you see suspicious behavior or individuals surveying the area, call our 24-hour non-emergency number at 714-647-7000 and choose Sheriff’s Dispatch for a deputy response. For a crime in progress, dial 911 immediately. Awareness is key—please share this information with your neighbors and loved ones to help keep our community safe!

Be a Good Neighbor: Leave Fireworks to the Professionals!
Yorba Linda Police Services and the City of Yorba Linda remind residents that possessing or discharging fireworks within Yorba Linda City limits is prohibited. If you light it, we'll cite it!
For your safety and the safety of others in the community, please do not light fireworks in Yorba Linda. To report illegal fireworks, please don't call 9-1-1. Instead, call the Yorba Linda Police Services' dispatch at 714-647-7000. The City's 4th of July Spectacular is a great alternative to personal fireworks. Additional information about local fireworks regulations and safety can be found in the Orange County Fire Authority's Fireworks Fact Sheet.

Harden Your Home with a Wildfire Home Assessment
With wildfire season fast approaching, it’s crucial for residents to take proactive measures to protect their homes. One preventative step is to conduct a Wildfire Home Assessment. This assessment involves a visit to your home by an Orange County Fire Authority representative, who will provide valuable tips on safeguarding your property from wildfires. During the free Wildfire Home Assessment, the exterior of your home and property, along with other risk factors, will be evaluated. You will receive specific recommendations to reduce your home's vulnerability to wildfires. Homes survive disasters because of the preparations made in advance. For more information, please visit the OCFA’s website or call 714-573-6774 to schedule a Wildfire Home Assessment.
Sign Up for Community Emergency Response Team Training
|
Mark your calendars for the next CERT Training, starting in October 2024. The Yorba Linda Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Training dates and locations are being finalized, but residents can expect approximately five training sessions over a three-week period. The goal of Yorba Linda CERT is to provide citizens with the basic skills to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the aftermath of a disaster. As a CERT volunteer, you can help by responding to the immediate needs of your neighborhood following an event when professional emergency responders are not immediately available to help.
To learn more or to register, please visit the CERT webpage, email Chris Peña, Emergency Management Coordinator, or call 714-961-7118.

Mosquito Control Tips and Tricks from OC Vector
|
Are mosquitoes dampening your outdoor activities? This summer, look for the Aedes mosquito, also known as the "ankle biter," which is active during the day and commonly found in Orange County. While the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) conducts treatments, it’s crucial to eliminate small water sources around your home where mosquitoes breed.
Here's how to keep these pests at bay:
- Keep plant saucers dry;
- Regularly clean pet water dishes;
- Avoid overwatering plants;
- Use EPA-certified mosquito repellent when outdoors;
- Wear long sleeves to prevent bites;
- Don’t give mosquitoes a chance to bite; and
- Stay vigilant and make source reduction a weekly routine.
OCMVCD offers valuable resources to help you prevent mosquito-borne diseases.

Do You Know Your Way? Sign Up for AlertOC!
|
Wildfires and other emergencies can be chaotic and stressful, so planning ahead is important! Yorba Linda is prone to damaging wildfires and other disasters that could require evacuating your home with little or no warning. While the City of Yorba Linda and our public safety partners have planned and trained extensively, including creating evacuation zones, the City needs you to do your part too. Since residents play an essential role in their own protection, the City encourages everyone to "KNOW YOUR WAY" and identify all the ways to exit your neighborhood. Since there is no one way to safety that fits all disaster scenarios, knowing multiple routes to get out of your community is critical.
To help you identify your neighborhood exits, we encourage you to visit www.yorbalindaca.gov/KnowYourWay. Then, search your address to learn your evacuation zone's name and view your zone's informational flyer to learn more about your neighborhood exits. During an evacuation, we'll refer to these zones by name when we send out AlertOC emergency alerts. To sign up for these emergency alerts, visit AlertOC.org. If you move or your contact info changes, be sure to update your AlertOC profile so you never miss a notification.

Keep Our Local Beaches Clean by Stopping Urban Runoff
|
Summer is almost here, and that means the return of warm-weather activities like trips to the beach. However, pollution in local creeks and channels can ruin opportunities to enjoy the surf and sand by making beaches unsafe for swimming. By simply changing one or two home practices, you can help reduce urban runoff, improve the health of waterways, and keep local beaches open all summer long:
- Keep trash off the ground and pick up pet waste;
- Sweep sidewalks and patios instead of hosing them down. Not only does this prevent wasted water, but it also reduces runoff which picks up pollutants on the ground carrying them to nearby storm drains, which drain to the ocean;
- Clean up outdoor spills with mops or absorbents instead of washing spills into a gutter or storm drain; and
- Do not overwater your lawn.
For more information about preventing urban runoff to the oceans, visit the OC Stormwater website.
