"Building Trust as a Leader"

Leadership is a powerful tool; it can make or break a team. Understanding that the team's success reflects your own is pivotal in the spa industry. Being a steward of trust and faith in your team is essential in a people-focused industry. Here are some key factors that help to create an environment of trust within your team.

Your vision is crucial. It should be clear and precise, something your team can rally behind. Give them more than just words; let them feel your passion and understand the direction you are leading them towards. A well-structured organization and a clear understanding of your role are vital to gaining respect from your team and building trust.

Remember, sincerity and integrity are always championed. Trust-building boils down to your work ethics and honesty. Treat everyone with equal importance, value their opinions, provide constructive feedback, and give credit where it's due.

Being a leader isn't just about charting the path; it's about loving what you do and those you do it with. When faced with challenges, take the time to reevaluate, refocus, and re-calibrate. Your love, passion, and focus will play a vital role in earning the trust invested in you.

Establish an open line of communication with your team, making them aware of both successes and failures. This transparency shows your team that you are dedicated to your goals, even when solutions aren't readily available.

As a leader, your actions should support your words. If you say something, do it, measure the implementation and results. Your strategy is the foundation of your success. Always remember to make your vision a living reality: communicate it constantly, let your team know where they stand.

Gaining trust as a leader isn't easy, but with clarity in your actions and thoughts, you can create a significant impact on your team.

"Voice-It" Spa Talk with Mitchell

Organizing Meditation in Motion

"Less Mess, Less Stress"

Happy Summertime Spa Leaders! So, I was procrastinating doing something on my laptop for work, in my defense I was at home, and you know how that song ends. I was getting something from my closet and happened to catch a glimpse of my overstuffed jewelry box. Mind you, I never wear anything but my wedding ring, so a messy jewelry box is not a priority project for me.

But I started rummaging anyway. Soon I found myself organizing cufflinks and putting the Mickey Mouse watch next to the Swatch watch and just listening to my inner dialogue.

My thoughts were taking their cues from my emotions which were being stimulated by everything I touched. I must say, there was a pretty healthy dialogue going on up there. While digging deeper into my treasure chest, I even found an important family heirloom I was sure I had lost 9 years ago! The 2 takeaways from this slice of my life:

First; procrastinating feels great and any guilt is cancelled out when you find something of monetary value. Second; Self-care starts with your next thought or action, so use your inner dialogue to support you no matter which hidden treasures you are rummaging through.

STAYING COMPLIANT

ATTENTION SPA LEADERS

IMPORTANT

Don't let your spa services get disrupted due to non-compliance with Florida state laws! At the core of your massage business is a Designated Establishment Manager (DEM) who ensures your activities align with the regulations required in our state of Florida. A gap in this area can lead to a whirlpool of disruptions - service shutdowns, financial penalties, and a steep decline in revenue.

Make sure that government submissions and communications are reaching the right department, or know which department they are going to, especially if these do not go directly to the spa director or manager.

Attention to this issue is paramount. Remain vigilant, ensure compliance, and retain the tranquility your spa promises.

For any questions, please contact the FSA at info@floridaspaassociation.com

Please read below from the FSMTA:

ATTENTION SPA DIRECTORS!

The last few years, we have seen several changes to Florida Laws pertaining to massage therapy. The majority have been focused on Massage Establishments as lawmakers work to combat human trafficking. It is important that you know and understand Florida law as it applies to your facility. Failure to do so could result in a potential shut down and significant revenue loss.

The requirement of a Designated Establishment Manager (DEM) created a considerable amount of turmoil and many spas took a long time to become compliant because they were either unaware of the statute or confused by it. The role of a DEM is to ensure that the massage establishment operates within the law. Click here for Florida Board of Massage Therapy Designated Establishment Managers (DEM) FAQs.

The most recent changes to Massage Establishment laws now have a greater impact on your spa inspections. In an effort to provide more information about Massage Establishment (MM) requirements, the FL Board of Massage Therapy scheduled Massage Establishment Workshops throughout the state. Click here to view the public book, which contains detailed information shared at these workshops. It would be beneficial to download and save this information for future reference.

SPA SPOTLIGHT

Brian Douglas, Director of Spa, PGA National Resort, Palm Beach Gardens

Brian Douglas, the esteemed Director of Spa at PGA National Resort, recently celebrated his two-year anniversary in this prestigious role. Under his leadership, the spa has flourished, benefiting from a multimillion-dollar renovation designed by tennis star Venus Williams and her design firm, VSTARR. This luxurious 40,000 square foot spa boasts 28 treatment rooms, a barbershop, a hair salon, a retail boutique, acupuncture services, three mineral pools, and a café.

Before his tenure at PGA National Resort, Brian was the Spa Director at Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach, where he elevated the spa to a Forbes Four-Star rating. His journey in the wellness industry began in North Carolina, where he worked as a clinical massage therapist at a North Carolina hospital, providing care to oncology and post-operative patients. He relocated to Florida in 2015, where he owned and operated a Global Wellness Award-winning day spa, featured in American Spa Magazine. He also had the honor of serving as a massage therapy instructor for the American Institute and an international skin care educator for Repechage Skin Care.

Brian believes that luxury in a spa experience is subjective and centers on making clients feel welcomed and appreciated. He emphasizes the importance of personal touches, such as addressing guests by their last name, remembering special occasions, and engaging with them on a personal level. These efforts, he asserts, can transform any spa visit into a luxurious and memorable experience.

In his downtime, Brian enjoys exploring the Florida outdoors, frequently visiting nature trails, parks, zoos, and of course, the beautiful beaches.

So if you’ve hopped on the water-drinking bandwagon, you’re doing yourself a big solid

“Water is essential for your body’s survival,” says Crystal Scott, registered dietitian-nutritionist with Top Nutrition Coaching. “It helps regulate your temperature, transports nutrients, removes waste, lubricates your joints and tissues, and it also plays a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of electrolytes and fluids in your body.”
