๐ฑ Welcome to our April Newsletter! ๐ผ
My absolute favorite time of the year has arrived! As the weather warms, the world around us springs back to life in a symphony of colors and sounds. It's a time when we can reconnect with nature, roll up our sleeves, and dive into the joy of gardening.
With foliage returning to its vibrant green hue and flowers blooming in a kaleidoscope of colors, there's no shortage of inspiration. I find immense joy in planting new beauties sourced from local nurseries, knowing that each addition contributes to the vitality of our environment.
But beyond the aesthetic pleasure, there's a deeper significance to landscaping and gardening with native plants. It's about conservation โ conserving water, protecting soil from erosion, and creating vital habitats for a plethora of wildlife, from buzzing pollinators to chirping birds and scurrying mammals.
Did you know that digging your hands into the soil isn't just good for your garden but also for your mental well-being? Research suggests that contact with soil and its resident bacteria can actually boost serotonin levels in our brains. Serotonin, often referred to as the "happy chemical," acts as a natural anti-depressant and strengthens our immune system. (Source: permaculture.com.au)
As we revel in the joys of spring, our calendar is brimming with exciting events to keep us engaged. Over the next few weekends, we'll be celebrating Earth Day, hosting Household Hazardous Waste Day, and hosting the Shred Event. We're thrilled to invite you all to join us in these endeavors as we come together to make a positive impact on our community and planet.
Here's to embracing the beauty of spring, nurturing our gardens, and fostering a stronger connection with nature. Let's make this season one to remember!
Warm regards,
Tammie Nason
Executive Director

๐๐พ Get Ready to Plant for a Greener Shore! ๐พ๐
๐ข Exciting News! Our community is gearing up for a special event: a Sea Oat Planting Day! We hope you will join us to make a positive impact on our coastal environment. We will be scheduling as soon as the plants have shipped. We will be installing 300 plants along the shore at Mashes Sands.
๐ฑ Why Sea Oats? ๐ฑ
Sea oats are not just your average plant โ they're superheroes of the shoreline! Here's why:
- Erosion Control: Sea oats have extensive root systems that bind sand dunes together, helping to prevent erosion caused by wind and waves. By planting sea oats, we're fortifying our coastline against the forces of nature.
- Habitat Creation: These remarkable plants provide crucial habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals. By planting sea oats, we're supporting biodiversity and creating homes for countless species.
- Storm Protection: During hurricanes and tropical storms, sea oats act as natural barriers, reducing the impact of storm surges and protecting inland areas from flooding. By planting sea oats, we're enhancing our resilience to extreme weather events.
- Beach Beautification: With their graceful, swaying fronds and golden seed heads, sea oats add beauty and character to our beaches. By planting sea oats, we're enhancing the natural charm of our coastal landscapes.
