Check out the Pristine Pizza at Pizzaiolo Primo

Pizza has traditionally been one of America's favorite foods, though it isn't native to America. Pizza was originally born in Italy and it has evolved since coming here to the United States. As a result, pizza in Italy is interestingly different from what one would find here.

This is where Pizzaiolo Primo comes in. Originally obtaining its craft and skill from the Italian city of Naples, Pizzaiolo produces Italian-style pizzas from a wood-fired brick oven as according to age old tradition. Opening in 1996, Pizzaiolo Primo has provided southwestern Pennsylvania with authentic Neapolitan pizza pie, along with pasta, antipasta, and other authentic Italian entrees, such as eggplant parmesan and lasagna. Pizzaiolo even offers dessert pastries like the classic cannoli.

Pizzaiolo Primo will be featuring a six-course food and wine pairing dinner in its Indiana Township/Hampton location on October 9th. The meal will feature some of the finest italian crafted wines and includes such entrees as smoked duck breast with mushrooms, spinach linguini, braised boneless beef short rib, and more. Dessert will include panna cotta covered in a berry coulis sauce. Chef Matt Stover will be in attendance so guests may pose questions to him.

Pizzaiolo Primo has three convenient locations in the Pittsburgh region: Mt. Lebanon, Warrendale and Indiana Township/Hampton, which just opened in May.

For more information, check out the Pizzaiolo Primo website here. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind food and wine pairing event!

Arcade Comedy: Pittsburgh Palace of Laughter

If laughter was medicine, than comedians would be doctors, and if a lot of medicine is needed, expect plenty of it at Arcade Comedy. Since 2013, Arcade Comedy has allowed the art of making people laugh to flourish. Even though improv is the most popular form of comedy performed at the theater, Arcade caters to many tastes, whether it's improv, sketch, or stand-up.

Today, we speak with Abby Fudor, one of the founders of Arcade Comedy Theater. Abby began her career in comedy at the University of Pittsburgh doing improv, a career she maintains today as a part of an improv group called Frankly Scarlett. Along with producing Friday Nite acts, she also runs classes in improv to pass on her skills to the next generation of improv actors. Her career with running venues began in 2005 with the Pittsburgh branch of a New York-based venue called the Bakerloo Theatre Project, where she became general manager in 2012. She also works as a freelance marketer for different non-profit venues across Pittsburgh.

With a background in improv, as well as a degree in theater and arts communication and in art management, Abby has plenty of experience to share, both with audiences and with students who wish to learn her craft. This is the other half of Arcade Comedy's business: giving people the knowledge to engage in the art of comedy, not just absorb it.

Arcade Comedy has thrived beneath Abby's expertise, along with that of Jethro Nolan, Kristy Nolan, Mike Rubino and her husband Randy Kirk at her side. Arcade Comedy has now grown to the point that their one room location is too small to handle all the business. Arcade Comedy will now be moving to 943 on Liberty Avenue to a larger space with two stage theaters inside. Equipped with a second theater in their venue, Arcade Comedy can run two shows at the same time and increase the number of classes, so now there isn't just more shows to see, but more people to perform them and potentially introduce us to the next generation of comedy.

Montenez Brings Fresh Mexican Flavors to Downtown

Las Velas looks out over Downtown Pittsburgh's favorite sweet spot, Market Square. The man who runs the whole operation is the owner and head chef David Montenez.

Born and raised in Mexico City, David says he has always been in love with food. From his grandmother's home cooking to his own Pittsburgh restaurant, he has followed the food wherever it was good. And he brought it all the way to Pittsburgh with the help of his wife.

"When I was 18 I moved to Cancun and I worked in the nightclub and restaurant industry for a while. Then I met my wife. I was the general manager of a nightclub in Cancun. We talked about it and said [we] would rather us try a different lifestyle. "

Following this lifestyle, David and his wife moved up to the greater Pittsburgh area and he began working at airport restaurants. From here, he worked his way through a variety of other odd jobs in the industry, notably at Eat n' Park. He notes Eat n' Park's model for workers as something he really admires.

"I think it's one of the greatest companies to work for," he comments.

Montenez worked in Somerset, Murrysville, and Harmarville. Then, due to his son's birth and working long midnight shifts, he decided to try a different route. He worked at Lone Star for a little bit, then at Baja Fresh--another company he has a lot of respect for. From his time here, he based a big part of Las Velas signature freshness.

"I learned to keep the quality fresh," he says, a trait not always found in Mexican cuisine. "The Pico de Gallo, the guacamole, all that is really good when it's fresh."

He says that even the training for chefs is different in Mexico. "In Mexico, if you're going to be a manager, they're going to train you to be a manager. [Here], I have to train for every single part," Montenez says.

When working for the companies, he had to perform all the jobs of everyone in the restaurant, from chef to hostess, in order to get a better idea of how the restaurant operated as a system.  He says that it's typically 2 months for 2 weeks in every position on the line.

Eventually, he opened his own restaurant in beautiful Downtown Pittsburgh, at his wife's suggestion. She had noticed that there was not a lot of dinner restaurants and that it would be a good opportunity for them. With this expectation, they moved closer to the area and gave it a try.

If you'd like to come to Las Velas and experience the fun, fresh foods and view of Market Square, David recommends the Pastor Tacos but notes that the burritos, enchiladas, and fish tacos are all very popular as well. Everything is something that David says is authentic to his time in Mexico. This means no hard shell tacos, only fresh salsa, and above all, great food. The restaurant is located on the second floor above Diamond Market and is open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Wigle Offers Walkabout Apple for Fans of Fall

After 3 years of Pittsburghers treating their tongues to the smoothness and sweet flavor of Walkabout Apple whiskey, Wigle Whiskey is giving you the opportunity to branch out into new experiences with Walkabout Apple. Visitors will be able to sample new cocktail recipes, partake in fun family-friendly activities, have some frozen liquid nitrogen apple cinnamon yogurt, courtesy of Piccadilly Artisan Yogurt, and enjoy the sweet sound of the blues during the event.

Walkabout Apple has managed to come from its humble origins as a student project from the Food Studies program at Chatham University to the popular seasonal beverage people enjoy every fall. And ever since 2014, Walkabout Apple has gotten its own celebration, and this year is no different. With apple whiskey cocktails and straight-up Walkabout samples, guests will be treated to a performance from the Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania, good eats from Blacksheep BBQ and a meet-and-greet with Johnny Appleseed himself for the kids.

There will also be a sneak peak of Threadbare apple cider during the festival, so guests will get to sample both some of the finest Pittsburgh whiskey and also what Wigle sister company Threadbare will have to offer in the near future.

We look forward to seeing you at the Wigle Distillery at 2401 Smallman Street in the Strip on October 8th.
