The Captain's Corner
Written by Kevin Deerman
It seems like the Bluefin Tuna have shown up in big numbers in the Gulf this year but for those of us in Texas we probably won't get a chance at bringing one to the dock even if we are lucky enough to get one on. There were already three Giants weighed this year prior to the MGCBC Memorial Day tournament and the NMFS had announced that there was only a little over 1000 pounds left in the Gulf quota when two more were brought to the scales. The Shockwave weighed a 691 pounder to take second place and HBGFC members Tom Shumate and Captain Darrell Weigelt and Mate Cameron Plaag on Patron brought a 750 pound fish to the dock after a 6 hour battle to take first place. Congrats guys!

The Learning Curve
Written by Captain Troy Day
Back in late April, Galati Yachts hosted an "Emergency Life Saver Marine" presentation presented by D-Dey Response Group, a one day CPR and First Aid training course. The course brought a lot of things to light, and was the best training I've ever attended, which was echoed by the other captains/crews/owners in attendance.

As we get going into the season, check your first aid kit and make sure it's updated and stocked. Renew your CPR and first aid training, and talk with your crew about their roles if a situation does occur. We go out in tough conditions hours from assistance, and need to be ready to provide care for the time it would take to get back to the dock. If something happens, having a game plan can prevent people from just standing around waiting for someone to act, possibly preventing an accident from escalating into a more serious situation.
