Connections happen at the FMEC Annual Meeting!
|
At the FMEC 2022 Annual Meeting in Arlington, VA, Dr. Josh Steinberg of the UHS Family Medicine Residency in Binghamton, NY gave a talk “How to Make an iPhone Medical App.” Not long after, Penn State medical students who attended the talk contacted Dr. Steinberg, representing a club of first year medical students interested in technology, led by Derek Barnett and Linda Qiu. Dr. Steinberg gave the talk to their student group, and then helped them with a project to turn an iPhone app into an Android version. Thank you, Dr. Steinberg, and congratulations to the Penn State students who are learning to program!
Dr. Steinberg’s work was also highlighted during the August 29 Family Medicine Residency Showcase on contraception held by the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Caroline LaFave shared information on Dr. Steinberg’s Contraception App, which is a free, handy point-of-care resource that brings together information from the Reproductive Health Access Project (RHAP), the CDC, the FDA and more. It’s available in both the Google Play and Apple stores.

Healthcare infrastructure funding opportunity

A challenge to building primary care services is access to affordable capital to build infrastructure. The FMEC works with Turner Impact Capital, a carefully-vetted company that is looking for worthy projects to increase access to primary care in underserved communities. FMEC members are invited to prepare and submit a two-page description of a project for potential funding. Dr. Leonard Fromer, President, Healthcare Initiatives at Turner Impact Capital, and his team will work with FMEC CEO Emeritus Larry Bauer to select a maximum of 5 projects. Representatives will be invited to present their proposed projects at the 2023 FMEC Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 14, 2023. For questions or to submit your proposal, please contact Larry Bauer at laurence.bauer@gmail.com.

Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month
|
National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15-October 15, 2023. September 15-18 are the anniversaries of independence for several Latin American countries, and many Latin and Spanish-speaking countries also celebrate Día de la Raza on October 12. By the year 2045, it is projected that whites will no longer make up the majority of the U.S. population, and within the new majority, Hispanics will be the largest group. How will your health system or training program be honoring Hispanic Heritage Month? According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, Hispanic/Latino Americans have the highest uninsured rates of any racial or ethnic group within the US, and they are significantly impacted by chronic lower respiratory diseases, liver disease, influenza and pneumonia, suicide, and kidney disease. Find graphics and social media, reading lists, fact sheets, and more on the US DHHS Get Involved in National Hispanic Heritage Month page.

Integrative Health
Watch for more information from the FMEC as we launch educational programing on, and convene faculty who are teaching it for networking, later in 2023. If you are interested in being involved in FMEC’s work on integrative and whole-person health, please reach out to Rebecca Bouck at rebecca.bouck@fmec.net. Shortly, the FMEC will start convening regular meetings of faculty who are teaching, or what to teach, integrative medicine, and we will start a series of virtual education programs on related topics.

Narrative Medicine and Breast Cancer
The FMEC’s learning collaborative of 10 family medicine residency programs has wrapped up. The project increased providers’ comfort with hereditary cancer discussions, and nearly all participants expect to use and teach about the CDC’s Bring Your Brave campaign materials. Next, the FMEC will develop a clinic-based QI project, with expected American Board of Family Medicine approval for performance improvement credit, on identifying and screening for hereditary breast cancer using narrative medicine. We are recruiting clinics to participate now and hope to launch the educational sessions and Qi cycles in December 2023. To join the collaborative, email Rebecca Bouck at rebecca.bouck@fmec.net
