FMEC Updates

New CDC App Collects Family Health History

My Family Health Portrait is a free, online family health history collection tool that lets you share family health history information with relatives and assess your risk for certain conditions. New in May 2024, the CDC launched MFHP Cancer (My Family Health Portrait: Cancer Edition), which is a free mobile app to collect and share family cancer history information with relatives and assess your risk for breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancer. Android users can download the app from Google Play, and iOS users can download the app from the App Store.

Watch for final reports from the FMEC’s quality improvement (QI) pilot project to engage family physicians in addressing hereditary breast cancer and using narrative medicine and Bring Your Brave resources in practice. This is a collaboration between the FMEC, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD), and the CDC. The seven residencies engaged have made huge strides in breast cancer screening, patient education, and referral!

Get inspired by the FMEC Healthcare Innovators Network summaries

Since 2008, the FMEC has hosted the Healthcare Innovators Network during its Annual Meeting, where industry leaders present cutting-edge practices and more. The 2023 presentations shared information such as: a risk assessment using demographics and billing data that stopped 300 patients from migrating to the high risk/high cost category; a primary care model where appointment times are 30 minutes in length, and physicians spend most of their time face to face with their patients; and evidence-based, guideline-driven lifestyle medicine group visits that have, for instance, stimulated significant blood pressure reduction and decreased medication after only 4 sessions. You can catch up on these presentations by reading short write-ups posted on the FMEC Annual Meeting Healthcare Innovators Network page.

News from the Field

Primary Care for All Americans

Primary Care for All Americans is a new organization whose mission is to build a movement in the United States that will lead to a primary care-driven system. The organization, which counts FMEC CEO Emeritus Larry Bauer among its founders, holds monthly virtual Teach-In/Learn-In sessions of 30-60 minutes. FMEC members interested in supporting PC4AA and participating in its activities should join PC4AA and visit the PC4AA website to sign up for their upcoming virtual meetings.

Updates from the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI)

Initially, ultrasound technology was cumbersome and expensive, limiting its use to radiologists who utilized it primarily for diagnostic imaging in dedicated radiology departments. As the first adopters, radiologists set the foundational standards for its use, focusing on high-quality imaging to support accurate diagnoses. Read An Overview of the Integration of POCUS into Primary Care on GUSI’s website. Also, join GUSI for a free webinar on June 26, Improving Diagnosis in General Practice: The Merits of POCUS.

Make sure to register for the FMEC/GUSI Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Preconference Workshop, offered twice on Thursday, September 19 at the FMEC Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA.

Congratulations to FACTS on a Successful Year

FACTS about Fertility became an independent organization in 2023 and is no longer a project of the FMEC. Read more about FACTST in their 2023 Annual Report and on the FACTS About Fertility website.

The FMEC has been instrumental in helping many projects get off the ground. Family medicine leaders have connected via the FMEC, presented initial programs and held meetings at the FMEC, received guidance and support from the FMEC CEO, and benefited from FMEC administrative support in their early years. Below are some of the projects that FMEC was involved in during their early stages.
