FMEC 2024 Annual Meeting Updates

Individual Registration for the 2024 Annual Meeting will open next week!

Watch your email.

The FMEC 2024 Annual Meeting will be September 19-21, 2024, at the Philadelphia Marriott in downtown Philadelphia, PA.

Residency Fair

The FMEC Residency Fair will include nearly 100 programs from around the northeast US. Over 20 have already signed up to participate! Through scholarships, the FMEC brings at least 300 medical students to the meeting to meet you and your program. The Residency Fair does not compete with educational programs or exhibits, so you can fully participate in the meeting.

The Residency Fair will happen on Friday, September 20 from 7pm to 9pm and Saturday, September 21 from 4:45pm to 6:45pm.

For more information, including costs, registration deadlines, information required to register, meeting policies, and more, visit FMEC 2024 Residency Fair.

Exhibits and Sponsorship

The FMEC Annual Meeting has tabletop exhibits on Friday and Saturday. As in 2023, we expect over 1,000 attendees, with nearly 300 family medicine residents, 400 or more faculty, and 300 students. This is a unique opportunity to market your health system, and recruiting/hiring is a great reason to exhibit, take out a program book ad, or sponsor something at the FMEC Annual Meeting. Please visit our Exhibitor/Sponsor Information page and view our prospectus for the array of opportunities to interface with the family medicine community.

Plan your Preconferences Now

On Thursday, September 19, the FMEC will offer preconferences that will inspire you and offer training in critical skills. Registration will open next week, and many of these sessions are capped, so register early.

Did you Submit a Session?

If you submitted a proposal to present an educational session, you will learn the status of your submission in early May 2024. All accepted presenters are required to register for the Annual Meeting. First authors on the submissions should watch their emails for notification from the FMEC.

Students Love the FMEC and Family Medicine

Help the FMEC bring 300+ students to the Annual Meeting in September!

Donate to support student scholarships today.

I had the pleasure of getting a scholarship for the FMEC meeting in Providence, RI. I gained profound enthusiasm for family medicine. With a humble heart and sincere intentions, the odds were in my favor, I matched into family medicine at my number one choice. I am drawn to family medicine's focus on preventive care and health promotion, which aligns with my desire to address health disparities and improve patient outcomes.

I am truly grateful for my experience during the conference. After going to this conference, I know other medical students will see their passion for family medicine will be even more than they felt before. Rochelle-Anne Benjamin, MD

I found the FMEC conference extremely helpful in attaining more insight to programs, what they offered, and how they fit me, as well as gaining interviews with them. I also had the pleasure of connecting with some amazing physicians who served as mentors during the application process and provided me overall exposure to other subspecialities in Family Medicine. FMEC gave me the opportunity to refuel my purpose and love for family medicine.

I am thrilled to say that I matched in family medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA! I hope to see everyone I’ve met and more at the next annual conference. Aa’Mani C. Dennis, MD, MS

HRSA Increases Initial Loan Repayment Offer

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), announced that it has increased by 50% the initial loan repayment amount available to primary care providers who commit to practicing in areas with significant shortages of primary care providers. Through HRSA’s National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program, PCPs could previously receive a maximum of $50,000 but can now receive up to $75,000 in initial loan repayment, in return for a two-year full-time service commitment to practice in an area with a shortage of health professionals. HRSA also is offering up to an additional $5,000 in loan repayment to all National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program participants who can demonstrate fluency in Spanish and who commit to practice in a high need area serving patients with limited English proficiency. For more information, see the HRSA press release.

News from the Field

The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Conference on Medical Student Education will be held January 30-February 2, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas. Submit by June 4, 2024 to present. Nominate a Resident for the STFM Resident Teacher Award

The STFM Resident Teacher Award recognizes teaching contributions by residents. Each family medicine residency program can give this award annually to the resident who has best demonstrated interest in and commitment to family medicine education. The award should be given to a third-year or fourth-year resident, not necessarily the chief resident or someone who is planning to do a fellowship or begin an academic career. Visit the STFM website for more criteria and to apply.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Updates

The FMEC leadership has been excited to work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and their regional offices to strategize about improving care to Medicare and Medicaid recipients and educating students and residents about the programs. At the FMEC’s February Board meeting, regional CMS leaders joined to discuss better support to providers for addressing social determinants of health, for instance providing care to unhoused patients; the new add-on code for visit complexity, G2211; and resources such as the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) provider education hotline and Medicare Learning Network (MLN) Matters Articles. Also, the Institute for Medicaid Innovation convened a Maternal Health Equity Summit which resulted in A Five-Year Blueprint to Improve Maternal and Infant Care. This report shares key takeaway, including five equity-focused recommendations to improve maternal and infant health through Medicaid. To learn more about what FMEC is doing to improve birth outcomes, read about the IMPLICIT Network.

Do you wonder how many people in your congressional district are enrolled in Medicaid? Enter your zip code or congressional district on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Congressional District Health Dashboard, which now includes Medicaid enrollment data. Unfortunately, as continuous coverage initiated during COVID ends, over 20 million Medicaid enrollees have been disenrolled as of mid-April. The KFF’s Unwinding Tracker shares the most recent figures.
