Elaine Phillips
BBO: SkiandFly
"My husband, Mike, and I learned to play bridge while he was in medical school. We were poor and could not afford to do much. A group of us would get together every Saturday and play bridge.

"Later a friend, former Sun Valley resident Patty Nelson, and I played duplicate in downtown Seattle. We gathered a few master points but did not register them anywhere.

Can Play Anywhere
"I love the virtual games because I can play regardless of where I am as long as I have my iPad. The games are fast and well-organized.

"I chose my BBO name because flying and skiing are two favorite pastimes. Mike and I are both licensed pilots and have flown for years. We both hold single- and multi-engine ratings, as well as instrument and commercial ratings. And we chose Sun Valley as our permanent home for the skiing.

Lived & Worked in 4 Cities
"In my past life I was a registered medical technologist and specialized in chemistry. We lived in Seattle, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Twin Falls. I worked in all of those places.

"Another favorite pastime, in addition to bridge, is bicycling. I bike two or three times a week and enjoy riding with buddies on Wednesdays.

"I've played the piano since I was 6, and performed a Mozart concerto at a concert in Sun Valley a few years ago. (Note from Jo and Chuck: We were lucky enough to attend, and she was wonderful.)

"I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this bridge group!"

YMCA Success Story
The Wood River Community YMCA, our partner in bridge and home to our face-to-face games, has paid off its mortgage. Learn how the Y's "unsung heores" helped in this story in Eye on Sun Valley.

Dan Turner, husband of bridge player Chris Turner, played a major role.
Judy Powell
BBO: Yardwork9
"I was surrounded during childhood by my parents and their friends playing bridge. Dad was the expert - Mom like the socialization.

"Dad's best bridge memory was of beating movie star and bridge expert Omar Sharif in a tournament in Chicago. Dad had no idea who he was until we kids informed him.

Waited 'til After College
"I purposely avoided learning the game until after I finished college. Many of my friends flunked out ... and I did not have that option.

"My degree in occupational therapy took me to the Seattle area where I put my book knowledge into reality. I loved it, and worked in my field fo 50 years.

"I began playing bridge about age 22. I formed a wonderful friendship with three women, and we played weekly for more than 25 years. We shared good times and bad times in our lives: births, deaths, divorces and happiness. All good therapy!

"I have two daughters, Cara and Ellen, one in Austin, Texas, and the other in Las Vegas. I am blessed.

Love All the Valley Offers
"I moved to this area in 1997. l loved all that the Valley offers. I played a bit of party bridge while still working. I also loved skiing, tennis, singing and moderate hiking. Pickleball has now become a favorite.

"I realize how important bridge is to maintaining memory. I was lucky enough to persuade Elaine Phillips to join me in duplicate and we have had so many good experiences at the bridge table. She is super-smart -- and nice -- and helps me to occasionally behave myself!

"My BBO name 'Yardwork9' was chosen because it seems I work far too long planting and tending to my yard.

"I have met so many interesting and lovely people over the game of bridge. I hope to continue for years to come."
Cheating in the News
Cheating, both at major tournaments and in online play, has been in the news lately. Stories in The New Yorker and The New York Times have both addressed the issue.
