TeamSmile Back on the Road!

The month of May was an exciting time for TeamSmile! TeamSmile hosted programs with the Indiana Pacers on May 14 & 15 and Buffalo Bills on May 26. Both programs were TeamSmile Phase II programs that provided dental screenings, oral health education, fluoride varnish application, and silver diamine fluoride treatments. TeamSmile and the Indiana Pacers served 119 children and provided $23,089 worth of treatment and education. TeamSmile and the Buffalo Bills served 252 children and provided $44,366 worth of treatment and education.

Even though the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has lifted many of their COVID 19 restrictions and guidelines, TeamSmile considers itself a medical facility and will still maintain strict guidelines which includes additional Personal Protective Equipment, barriers, and six feet of separation between areas.  TeamSmile has developed a Phase II Plus program to conduct emergency dental procedures on site. Virtual Programs

TeamSmile has partnered with the University of Buffalo Dental School to provide Virtual Oral Health Education Presentations, which includes product distribution. Together, we have now conducted seven programs and served 1,811 children. In the bags that we’ve distributed to the children, we included a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, hand sanitizer, and an oral health coloring book. We are grateful to Colgate, Purell and DentaQuest, respectively, for their product contributions.

TeamSmile will continue to host virtual programs in partnership with the University of Buffalo Dental School students and faculty to allow for students to learn about their oral health from the safety of their computer.

The TeamSmile Annual Golf Tournament in Memory of Tedd Reese took place on May 17. Thank you to our golf committee, all of our sponsors, the celebrities, the people that donated and bought auction items, and all of those that had foursomes in the event. It was a huge success!
TeamSmile also participated in the BMA Foundation's Dine and Dance with the Stars event on June 12.
Valerie McCracken represented TeamSmile this year and rocked it!
Volunteer Spotlight

Simply put, I am just a kid from Brooklyn. However, behind the New Yorker identity, I have always wanted to serve others and TeamSmile has given me the opportunity to do so sooner than I expected. Growing up, my family and I relied heavily on outreach organizations like TeamSmile for proper dental care and education. I was always excited for the day pop-up clinics opened up in school; not just because it meant we got a half-day of school, but mainly because it felt like a privilege to receive some sort of dental healthcare. As I grew up, I’ve come to learn that proper dental healthcare and education should be a necessity and right for everyone, and we can start with providing that to children. Being a first-generation American - let alone first-generation dental student – I’ve always known I wanted to give back to children in need as much as I have been given in my life. As I continue in my schooling and onto my career, I still keep this goal as one of my main priorities.

What has started as just an idea, the TeamSmile virtual presentations has reached beyond our expectations. This could never have happened without John McCarthy and the TeamSmile staff, Dr. Dian, the UB TeamSmile dental student team, and all of our sponsors. Every single person that had a hand in the process from brainstorming to fruition is responsible for the success we have had so far. In a time in our world where we must adapt to new norms, I am glad we have used technology to its advantage to make sure these children are still being prioritized. Through all the trials and tribulations, the virtual education program has set a foundation to allow us expand the program and to serve even more children. Just as I constantly say to the TeamSmile Virtual Presentation team here at UB, if you think you are bringing enough enthusiasm, bring more. I believe the same for where the virtual presentations will go. With that being said, I am extremely proud of the whole team and unbelievably optimistic for what is to come.

What we have achieved so far is just a glimpse of what is to come in the future.

Partner Spotlight
We know oral health is essential to every person’s total health and well-being. Yet, millions across America – and too many children – suffer from the social and economic consequences of preventable dental disease every day. DentaQuest is partnering with TeamSmile and its community of dentists, parents, and community leaders to make sure at-risk kids get quality care that will keep them in school, pain free and healthy. As a purpose-driven company, we work to prioritize health in our communities. This collaboration with TeamSmile is helping us meet that goal.

"TeamSmile creatively responded to the challenges of the pandemic and creatively reworked its program to continue to give children needed oral health education. DentaQuest is honored to support TeamSmile and its mission."
