September 2023 News

Stacked Odds

What happens when you bring a group of writers together to write in the voices of different characters whose lives will all intersect during a key event in their community? You get a novel that, based on the review from best-selling author of The Price of Time, Tim Tigner, "Grabs you by both head and heart as it leads you through dark prickly places then points you toward the light." In the time it has taken this book to make its way to the printer, it has been praised not only by Tim Tigner, but also Former Director of the New York State Emergency Management Agency, John R. Gibb; President of Brady United, Kris Brown; and Gun Safety Advocate, Fred Guttenberg. It is a distinct honor for the Charles Bruce Foundation to partner with Sunbury Press to get this important novel published. The book is now available for pre-order at the publisher's site. The contributors to this book are from across the U.S., so if you would like to meet some or all the authors at a book launch near you, please contact Pat LaMarche at epicjourney10@gmail.com to plan an event. And yes, Carlisle events are already being planned. Stay tuned.

100 % of the authors' royalties will be donated to organizations working to prevent gun violence.

Flash Request for Musicians

The Charles Bruce Foundation is looking for better ways to support working musicians, but we NEED your help. If you are a musician or a musician's friend who has ideas about ways we may be able to support you in your art, please email us at music@charlesbrucefoundation.org.

Sending a Princess Back to School

The Greater Augusta Back to School Program in Maine hosted their annual backpack and school supplies giveaway on Sunday, August 20. Unique to this year's program were the 150 copies of books bearing the Charles Bruce Foundation imprint to supplement the books provided with close to 1300 backpacks given to area children ages 5 to 14. The program began seven years ago to assist a population of close to 60% of students who begin school at or below poverty level and could really benefit from the extra help. At CBF, we know that kids who own their own books are more likely to finish high school and succeed in life. We're excited, through your generous support, to be able to participate in events like these that put books in the hands of those kids.

Holiday Hijinks

In keeping with the philosophy that the holidays can never begin too soon (just look around your local department store's holiday decorations if you need further proof), the Charles Bruce Foundation is delighted to offer a children's picture book to brighten winter spirits. From newcomers Sam Rob, writer, and Holly Cameron, illustrator, comes Wilbert Christmashead. You will delight as you follow Wilbert the cow on his adventures, and at times misadventures, as he travels with Santa. Get your copies to line the stockings of loved ones today by using the link provided below. Better yet, join us Saturday at Whistlestop Bookshop and purchase copies to be signed by the author and illustrator between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm.

A Graphic Space Journey

The Giant Expo Hall at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex played host to Jason Seaux, our favorite graphic artist, during the 2023 Harrisburg Comic and Pop Con. Jason was on hand to sign ashcan copies of his latest comic illustrations featured in Major Tom Versus the Spiders from Mars. The book was written by Phil and Pat LaMarche, lettered by Chad Bruce, and colored by Chistiano Cruz. Think you can guess the inspiration behind this comic? Add Jason's take on WAM the Spaceman, and you have the makings for a rocking good time in space. Stay tuned for news about the official release of the comic.
