Picturing Priscilla
As you know from our May newsletter, Priscilla's Picnic with the President did not end the saga of our benevolent heroine. After receiving encouragement to take the story in a different direction, author Pat LaMarche created a full-color picture book for wee ones and their loving adults entitled Priscilla and Her Pals in the Park. Although the book's official launch date will be September 1, we are expecting some early shipments of the books, and you can be a lucky recipient of one of these hot-off-the-presses copies. For a $20 donation, we’ll ship you the newest Priscilla picture book as soon as it’s available! Click the button below to place your order.
This Woman's Work
Art as a means of understanding the many facets of women's work serves as the inspiration for an upcoming series of Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) exhibits. Entitled, "Women's Work," the CALC Facebook page explains, "We hope to see artwork inspired by everything from motherhood to law enforcement – military service to farming – the sky’s the limit. That’s why the title is perfect."

To support this effort, the Charles Bruce Foundation and author J M West have teamed up with CALC for an exhibit on the life of Carlisle’s most notorious resident, Bessie Jones, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her murder.

J M West published the 2021 biography Madam Bessie Jones through Sunbury Press. CALC’s Catherine Stone explains, “We are excited to partner, not only with the Charles Bruce Foundation but with J M West as well. Her book about Bessie, Bessie’s impact on the community – for decades – inspires us to think of all the jobs women have done through the centuries, often unappreciated and out of necessity."

The exhibit will be held at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) 38 West Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA. beginning Wednesday, October 26, thru Saturday, October 29, 2022, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A meet and greet with the artists and author will be Friday 5 p.m. thru 7 p.m. – free and open to the public.

Go West, Young Man
Many of you know Emmanuel Nsingani as a long-time Charles Bruce Foundation-sponsored musician. In fact, his last performance for us on May 21st was featured in our May newsletter. Sadly for us, this was also the last performance he will make for us here in Carlisle because he has relocated to Arizona.

As a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo from a musical family, he wrote most of his music in his native Lari tongue, although he is considering composing some English language music. As he related to WITF Harrisburg, “People like what they hear when I play. Some of them don’t really want to know the words because they feel it. And they do understand it in their own way. But there are times when I feel like I need to explain this song. … I want [my] message to be heard. … I’ve realized people want to know more about what I say.”

The Charles Bruce Foundation thanks Emmanuel for all the live music he provided during his time in Carlisle, and we all wish him continued success in his new home!
