Art as a means of understanding the many facets of women's work serves as the inspiration for an upcoming series of Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) exhibits. Entitled, "
Women's Work," the CALC Facebook page explains, "We hope to see artwork inspired by everything from motherhood to law enforcement – military service to farming – the sky’s the limit. That’s why the title is perfect."
To support this effort, the Charles Bruce Foundation and author J M West have teamed up with CALC for an exhibit on the life of Carlisle’s most notorious resident, Bessie Jones, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her murder.
J M West published the 2021 biography
Madam Bessie Jones through Sunbury Press. CALC’s Catherine Stone explains, “We are excited to partner, not only with the Charles Bruce Foundation but with J M West as well. Her book about Bessie, Bessie’s impact on the community – for decades – inspires us to think of all the jobs women have done through the centuries, often unappreciated and out of necessity."
The exhibit will be held at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) 38 West Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA. beginning Wednesday, October 26, thru Saturday, October 29, 2022, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A meet and greet with the artists and author will be Friday 5 p.m. thru 7 p.m. – free and open to the public.
