Chapter Supports Plumbing Apprenticeship

The Chapter's board of directors and members voted to provide the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors of Nevada with a grant of $10,000 to benefit the PHCC of Nevada Education Foundation Joint Apprenticeship Training Program.

The organization requested the grant from SN-ICC to help pay for desperately needed items for the instructors and students in the program - new laptop computers, classroom projectors, video camcorder and some miscellaneous computer accessories.

Since 1991, the organization has operated a successful 4-year, Nevada-state registered plumbing apprenticeship program, which has graduated more than 140 journeyman plumbers; currently, 79 students are enrolled.

Chapter Observes ICC Building Safety Month

The Chapter was pleased to participate, once again, in Building Safety Month, a campaign of the International Code Council, that takes place in May to raise awareness about building safety. This campaign reinforces the need for the adoption of modern, regularly-updated building codes, and helps individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures.

The Chapter secured Building Safety Month proclamations from the governor and the councils and commissions of jurisdictions in Southern Nevada, thanks primarily to the efforts of member, the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association.

In addition, the Chapter issued Building Safety Month e-newsletters during each of the four weeks of May. Building Safety Month was the theme of the May Membership Meeting; BSM materials were displayed at the meeting.

Chapter Distributes Annual Swim Grants

The Chapter has completed distribution of the annual Toddler Swimming Lesson Grant funds to local government jurisdictions that offer the swimming lessons this season.

The Chapter budgets $22,500 to provide annual grants of $2,500 to each jurisdiction that offers the swimming safety program. The budget amount was increased to $27,000 for fiscal 2022/2023.

SN-ICC created the program in 2009 to advocate for toddler pool safety. Drowning accidents are the leading cause of death and accidents of children under the age of 5, according to the National Safety Council.

The program is coordinated by the Chapter's Public Outreach Committee, chaired by Boulder City Building Official Nathan Ball.

SN-ICC members are committed to reducing child drowning deaths and recognize that teaching toddlers to swim is one of the best ways to reduce such deaths.

SN-ICC Scholarships Awarded to Local Students

The Chapter's Scholarship Subcommittee, chaired by Michael Gentille of PCNA Group, has completed judging the applications for SN-ICC scholarship funds, and awarded nearly 20 deserving local high school, college and graduate students a total of $50,000 in scholarship funds to use toward their academic degree programs.

Preferential scoring was given to students who attend an institution of higher education in Nevada, and pursue studies in a building-related field, such as architecture, engineering and construction management.

The students range from high school seniors entering freshman class of college to graduate students completing advanced degrees.

Based on the points the students received in the judging process, they received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 for the upcoming school year.

The Chapter thanks our 12 members who served as judges to review and score the applications.

The Scholarship Subcommittee has openings for SN-ICC members who would like to participate in the planning for the 2022/2023 academic year program.
