August 2023

A Message from the president:

Happy August Everyone! It’s hard to believe that we’re already in the last few weeks of summer. I don’t know about everyone else, but I feel like this summer is just flying by.

At AFP Nova Scotia, we took a bit of a pause in programming over the summer, but we’ve resumed our regular board meeting schedule and have lots planned for the fall. Our Education team has been busy planning a full roster of professional development sessions that we know you’ll enjoy. We’re also always looking for ideas for sessions and speakers so if you have any ideas please let us know!

Any of you who attended our Maritime Fundraising Conference would know that each attendee received a copy of Collecting Courage, a powerful book about the lived experiences of 14 Black fundraisers across North America. We’re thrilled to share that this book is now available through the public library system. Earlier this month we donated three copies to the Halifax Public Library. If you live outside of HRM, these books are still accessible via your local library branch.

Have you ever thought of volunteering with AFP Nova Scotia? Now is the perfect opportunity! We have a number of vacancies on committees coming up, including:

·        Communications

·        Education

·        Sponsorship

·        Young Professionals

·        Youth in Philanthropy

·        National Philanthropy Day

If any of these opportunities pique your interest don’t hesitate to reach out to myself whitney.maclean@nscc.ca or President- Elect, Alison Clements, alison.clements@nshealth.ca.

Thank you all for everything you do for our chapter and our sector, your work and passion are so appreciated by each of us at AFP Nova Scotia.

Stay tuned for what we have coming this fall! I look forward to more opportunities to connect with each of you.

All the best,

Whitney Maclean – President, AFP Nova Scotia

Continue Supporting Diveristy and Inclusion in the Fundraising Community

Complete your AFP Member Demographic Information!

AFP is committed to the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) in the fundraising profession. Join us in supporting those principles by providing demographic information in your AFP member profile. Your information will remain confidential and is used to benchmark progress, promote equity, and create new programs.

Having complete demographic information helps the AFP community in a few ways:

  • We can better define what inclusion, diversity, equity, and access means to our members and the broader fundraising community, and it will help to assess our progress.
  • Based on the data you provide, we can create programs, products and services that match what you, our members, will feel connected to.
  • Having more complete demographic data will help us promote equity within our community and grow membership through an inclusive lens.
