Dear Temple Emanuel Community,

For almost a decade now, Temple Emanuel has served dinners for I-Help (Interfaith Housing Emergency Lodging Program) to the homeless on the first 2 Sundays of each month. To all of you who have helped serve these meals and lunches for the next day, thank you so much!

As we continue to work within the program, our assignments have changed as has the location. We need your help to fill our new days and times at the new locations

We hope that this will provide an opportunity for those who have not previously been able to represent Temple Emanuel by volunteering with I-Help to do so in the future.

Going forward, we are now assigned the 1st Wednesday of each month. The new location will be Tempe Church of Christ, located on Mill Ave. (Please note: this location does not have a kitchen where the meals can be prepared, all food must come prepared.)

Our second day of the month will be every 3rd Thursday. This new location will take place at King of Glory Church on Southern off the 101. (This location does have a fully stocked kitchen for cooking.)

With these changes, we are now looking for new volunteers beginning in July through the end of the year!

What does it mean to volunteer?

Your group will be responsible to purchase, prepare, and serve a hot meal for 35-40 people on the day you commit to. As well as purchase, prepare, and distribute a take-away sack lunch for those 35-40 people to consume the following day.

We generally recommend volunteering with a group of 4-6 people to help split the cost, and the preparation and serving work.

Although the timing for serving is flexible, we do recommend planning on serving dinner between 5:30 pm- 6:00 pm on both Wednesday and Thursday evening. Please note, that if you sign up for the Wednesday location, the food will need to be prepared off-site as they do not have a prep kitchen available for use.

For ease of serving, we do recommend that the takeaway sack lunches (for the next day) come prepacked and ready to hand out.

What should be included in the meal?

We recommend providing a balanced meal. This generally would include an entrĂ©e, a vegetable, a starch, and a dessert.

For the takeaway sack lunch, we ask that you do not include anything that requires refrigeration. An easy meal to prepackage for this is a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, a piece of fruit, a bottle of water, and maybe a bag of chips or cookies.

What you choose to provide is really up to you!

Who is eligible to volunteer?

All are welcome to volunteer! Families, groups, friends, committees, social clubs, neighbors, clubs... Everyone has an opportunity to do this Mitzvah!

What dates are available to volunteer?

As of July, we are rebuilding our calendar and have all dates (the 1st Wednesday and 3rd Thursday of each month) available!

How do I sign up? Who do I contact for more information?
