Change on Many Fronts: Introducing Our First Set of Conference Panels

By Jim Toes, STA

President and CEO

This September, our 91st Annual Market Structure Conference – “Shifting the Landscape” – will highlight the business, regulatory and technological forces driving change and innovation in US market structure. Earlier this month, we were pleased to announce an initial set of panels and fireside chats that will delve into these dynamics. These topics extend across asset classes and firm types. Here’s a taste of what’s in store in Orlando.

Dan Gallagher, Chief Legal, Compliance and Affairs Officer at Robinhood and former SEC Commissioner, will focus on changes impacting the growing retail community and how his firm is responding to these needs, with a particular focus on crypto trading. Arianne Adams of Webull and Joe Mecane of Citadel Securities will continue the retail theme on their panel, which will tackle the democratization of investing and some of the innovations that are increasing access to financial markets.

The exchange/ATS landscape is another space that has seen significant disruption in recent years, marked by new entrants and continued fragmentation. Recently announced plans to launch the Texas Stock Exchange (TSXE) in Dallas is just the latest example. Adam Inzirillo, Executive Vice President and Head of Data and Access Solutions at Cboe Global Markets, will explore how this kind of innovation is impacting the venues, their members/users and the market at large.

The options space has been a hotbed of change and innovation of late, and 2024 has been no exception, with increasing demand from both retail and institutional investors. Our “Listed Options – They’re Everywhere” panel will aim to explore the impacts of this broader adoption, the benefits of the asset class and how market participants can leverage the fungibility of options to enhance liquidity in their underlying assets.

Finally, with the SEC pursuing its most ambitious agenda in years and the upcoming presidential election in November, the regulatory landscape is facing even more potential changes than usual. Industry executives representing Robinhood, IEX, Morgan Stanley, GTS Securities and Tradeweb will discuss these topics, how financial services firms should respond and how potential reforms could impact US equity market structure.

Over the coming weeks, expect to see more updates on the government and business leaders who will be in Orlando to share their time and insights. With so many changes in flight, established business models are in the crosshairs. That’s not a bad thing, but it will require industry firms to adapt to the shifting landscape. Our hope is that this year’s conference will help you define your roadmap and gain the necessary knowledge and support.

We look forward to welcoming you to our conference!

The Power of the Entrepreneurial Spirit

By Inessa Ruffman, JonesTrading

2024 STA WIF Chair

Whether you're the Founder and CEO of a Fortune 500 company or you had a lemonade stand as a child, the entrepreneurial spirit is a key component for many women in leadership positions. The term entrepreneur comes from the French entreprendre, meaning "undertake." This certainly speaks to women throughout the financial industry and those in leadership positions - the confidence to trust your ability and undertake a challenge or new opportunity is an excellent way to grow as a professional, particularly in male-dominated industries. Upstart Texas Stock Exchange Aims to Be Game-Changer, but Faces Uphill Climb

Dallas Business Journal

TXSE's registration will go through an approval process with the SEC, including a public comment period where the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will have an opportunity to scrutinize the proposal. Jim Toes, president and CEO of the Security Traders Association, said TXSE has likely been meeting with SEC officials for months and estimated its timeline off those conversations. However, he said all bets are off with regard to timing when the filing becomes public. Read more
