What's Happening at CUNY

image

Today is #CUNYTuesday and we ask that you join us in changing the lives of our amazing students! At the heart of this appeal is the opportunity to invest in an institution we all know is integral to NYC. Donate today to support the students whose success makes CUNY’s mission so vital.

This CUNY library is playing host to a thought-provoking traveling exhibit from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museumone of only 50 in the country selected to do so. “Americans and the Holocaust” scrutinizes the perception that the U.S. knew little about the Nazis’ objectives.

CUNY has launched an innovative program that has the potential to connect tens of thousands of students to essential food, housing and health benefits. CUNY CARES hires students to conduct peer outreach about key resources and supports.

This college has just launched a computer science major that prioritizes a robust technical foundation.

A Hunter College High School senior was honored at the White House as a National Student Poet, the nation’s highest honor for young poets presenting original work.

This CUNY computer science major presented her work at the recent Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) Convening at Boston University. Her project analyzed the impact of commercial development on city wetlands.

CUNY received $550,000 from the New York City Council to expand anti-hate efforts across its campuses.

CUNY Callouts: Meet New Faces

Julio C. Guevara worked for 22 years in the hospitality industry before deciding to go back to school at age 40. He earned a criminal justice degree from BMCC in 2023 and is currently pursuing a political science degree with a law minor at John Jay. Born and raised in Mexico, Julio moved to New York at 18. “It was a difficult transition moving to a new country where I had a language barrier and wasn't familiar with the culture,” he says.

When he enrolled at BMCC, Julio felt like an outsider due to his age, but he credits “CUNY’s diverse student body” for making him feel welcome. While he juggles his full-time job as an intake officer at Queens Legal Services with his responsibilities as a part-time student, he is determined to finish his bachelor’s degree in the hopes of taking his next step: law school.

What work are you doing now?

“Currently I am working for a nonprofit organization that provides free legal representation for low-income New Yorkers. After I graduate from John Jay, I hope to attend CUNY Law so I can better advocate for tenants’ rights and immigration reform.”

What advice do you have for CUNY students?

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions, network with your peers and professors, take advantage of all the free resources CUNY offers.”
