Dear CHT Members,

It’s been an exciting couple weeks here at Champlain Housing Trust. We hosted our first Members’ Movie Night at Centennial Field. It was a perfect night for dinner and a movie! The week prior, at the Community Paint Day, Juniper Creative Arts led the co-creation of a stunning mural on the Old North End Community Center. Gathering with residents and friends has been a highlight of our summer – check out the links to photos below.

The CDC recently extended a partial eviction moratorium and while it doesn’t cover everyone in Vermont, CHT has already committed to not evicting residents unable to pay rent due to the pandemic. Financial assistance continues to be an option for homeowners and renters who need it. We encourage households that qualify to apply now.

The housing market in our region remains especially difficult. Over the last several months, we’ve received 1,300 applications for just 50 apartments. While availability of both apartments and homes remains very tight, CHT has a number of homes for sale through our Shared Equity Program.

We have an unprecedented level of development underway. I look forward to announcing new initiatives soon that will make a big impact in addressing the affordable housing needs in our communities.

Please stay safe!

Butternut Grove Rises in Winooski
An exciting new Shared Equity homeownership opportunity is on the way in Winooski! Construction of Butternut Grove has begun and once completed will add 20 three-bedroom affordable homes for sale on Mallets Bay Avenue in the “Onion City.”

Butternut Grove includes an expanded focus to increase homeownership opportunities for buyers who are Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC). CHT is collaborating with AALV (Association of Africans Living in Vermont) and other BIPOC-led organizations to market these homes.

Members' Movie Night
It was a beautiful night for dinner and a show at Centennial Field during our first ever Members' Movie Night! More than 200 people joined us to watch Disney's "Moana." Thanks to the Lake Monsters for hosting us.

Community Art Day
It was an honor to partner with Juniper Creative Arts for a Community Paint Day on July 31st. The neighborhood turned out to help paint a new mural on the Old North End Community Center. Thanks to Will Kasso Condry, Jennifer Herrera Condry, and Alexa Herrera Condry for involving everyone in the creation of "Moringa the Medicine Woman."

"I chose to serve on the Board of Champlain Housing Trust to be a voice for my neighbors and others in the community. I also believe with me being on the Board, I can help to shed light on the reality of affordable housing from a tenant's perspective."
