WASTE REDUCTION PRESENTATION AT CITY COUNCIL STUDY SESSION TONIGHT
|
Autumn Salamack, Climate Mitigation & Adaptation Officer, will present an update to the 2023 Waste Reduction Regulations tonight, Jan 17 during the Study Session at City Hall.
Autumn's presentation will include a list of food service ware products temporarily exempted for 2023 ( a full version of that list can be viewed on the Chamber website), and be accompanied by direct feedback on 2023's implementation of the ordinance from local business owners and input from the Chamber's business ambassador program.
After tonight, there are three more ways to share feedback with the City:

Via COBI Community Chat sessions: Business owners can talk directly with city climate action staff at a new monthly session - January's is from 9-10am on Monday the 23rd at our Chamber Offices (395 Winslow Way East)

Via public comment at any City Council Business Meeting: any community members can sign up for a 3-minute speaking window at each regular business meeting - the next is on January 24 at City Hall

KITSAP TRANSIT RIDERSHIP UP, DRIVER NUMBERS REMAIN LOW
|
Good News: Kitsap Transit reports a 25% increase in ridership for November 2022, which is an impressive 5 times above expectations.
Bad News: With the start of 2023, there is a significant employee shortage crisis with bus drivers.
Outcome: An ongoing effort is still underway to find the staff required to begin increasing service and resuming a Sunday service.

BIPD, BISD, BYS COME TOGETHER IN RESPONSE TO YOUTH IN CRISIS

Also at tonight's City Council Study Session, Police Chief Joe Clark, and Kelsey Lynch (BIPD Community Health Navigator) will present an update on BIPD response to reports of sexual assault with youth in the community.
Joe and Kelsey will then be joined by Kristina Rogers (BHS Principal), and Courtney Oliver (BYS Executive Director) to detail their collaboration on creating age-group appropriate presentations on sexual harassment, drugs and alcohol for the island's youth.

AWB: STATE LAWMAKERS SHOULD PUT ECONOMY FIRST
|
In a Kitsap Sun guest article, the Association of Washington Business (AWB)'s, Kris Johnson, writes that employers are feeling a growing sense of unease.
Almost one-third of employers recently report their business is beginning to experience a downturn in revenues.
The AWB believes that Gov. Inslee's proposed $70.4 billion budget plan would drain reserves at a time of tremendous uncertainty, leaving a very small safety net.

The Washington Wine specialty license plate has been finalized and is now available to order through the state Department of Licensing.
Revenue generated from these specialty plates will go to State of Washington Tourism and support state tourism efforts.
