BUSINESS OWNERS: COMMIT TO ERASE THE WASTE TODAY
As part of the Waste Reduction ordinance passed last year by City Council, new requirements to further reduce single-use plastics will start on January 1, 2023 at all Island retail food and lodging establishments.

Chamber Ambassadors will soon be visiting impacted Bainbridge businesses to help them prepare for the new requirements, but businesses already ahead of the game are now eligible to receive recognition as a Climate Smart Bainbridge business.

After signing a pledge to immediately reduce single-use plastics, the City will provide businesses with:
  • A PVC-free window cling communicating their waste reduction leadership
  • Social media promotion
  • Newspaper advertisements

Customers can look for the window clings appearing around the Island in upcoming weeks and can also make their own pledge to erase the waste.

BETHANY'S AFFORDABLE HOUSING PILOT PROPOSAL MOVES TO PUBLIC HEARING
During the Aug. 16 study session, city council members voted 5-2 to advance a proposed Density Bonus for Religious Organizations to a future Public Hearing.

Key details of the proposed ordinance (No. 2022-22):
  • Would allow Bethany to place up to 23 affordable housing units on their land
  • The affordable housing must stay in place for 99 years
  • Created to advance the Bethany Pilot Program, limits itself to religious facilities who want to build affordable housing within a quarter mile of Winslow
  • Supports City goals for affordable housing and in line with recent State law giving religious organizations more latitude to create affordable housing on their lands

The two dissenting votes came from councilmembers Michael Pollock and Kirsten Hytopoulos.

ANTICIPATE MAJOR TRAFFIC DISRUPTION, DELAYS ON 305
THROUGH END OF AUGUST
Weekday closures of at least 20 minutes on 305 at Sportsman Club should be expected as work continues to restore fish habitats and remove a culvert under the highway.

The shoulders of the highway have been removed in both directions, and there will also be speed limit revisions from 50 mph to 35 mph from around North Madison Avenue NE and Sportsman Club Road NE.

Bicyclists can ride with traffic or follow the signposted detour.

If you are thinking of avoiding that area for the next couple of weeks, do remember that the city is also currently completing work near Sportsman Club Road and New Brooklyn as well as on High School Road between Madison Ave and SR 305.

  • Improve public health outcomes with cleaner air and active transportation
  • Reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions to support climate change resiliency

Public hearings of draft proposals are expected to begin in October, with the target of adopting new regulations by January for implementation in the coming year.

SHAPE OUR CITY: COMMUNITY SURVEY OPEN TO ALL RESIDENTS THROUGH FRIDAY
The time is now for all residents to have a voice in the crafting of plans for the future of our Island.

Take a moment to help the city understand your perspective on the Bainbridge community, values, and future with this Community Survey providing vital data to inform new COBI programs, policies, and strategic plans.

The best part? It’s fast, easy, and (optionally) anonymous while also gathering broad demographic and regional breakdowns to better understand Bainbridge.
